Assistant/Associate Professor-School of Biomedical Sciences (Genetics)

Job Description


Our research mission is driven in part by particular strengths represented by five primary centers/institutes: The Center for Healthy Aging, The Institute for Translational Research, The Institute for Health Disparities, The North Texas Eye Research Institute, and the Center for Human Identification. Within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics (MIG), there are twenty-three full-time faculty and two adjunct faculty members with diverse research interests spanning molecular genetics, cellular immunology, microbiology, cancer, and health disparities and supported by more than $9 million in federal grant funding. We foster a highly collaborative and collegial environment in which the faculty, trainees, and staff work together to advance innovative, cutting-edge scientific discovery related to human health.

The department provides high quality training for students interested in careers in biomedical research or medicine. The goals of our graduate program are (1) to provide a broad and sound education in microbiology, immunology, and genetics of human disease, and (2) to provide rigorous research training in an environment dedicated to advancing biomedical science. The department has numerous trainees including DO/PhD, PhD, and MS students as well as postdoctoral fellows. The trainees and faculty in the department are a cohesive group from diverse backgrounds which fosters scientific innovation and discovery. We support graduate training programs in genetics, cell biology, immunology,microbiology, biochemistry, and cancer biology. Our faculty and trainees also take full advantage of the tremendous breadth of expertise and knowledge across the UNT Health Science Center (HSC).

The person who fills this position will be expected to promote the mission, vision, and values of HSC by pursuing, developing, and leading research, innovation, and discovery in translational genetics/genomics. Individuals whose research is synergistic with one or more of the HSC’s areas of research strengths (health disparities, aging, human identification, etc.) are particularly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

· Teaching and mentoring of health professional and graduate students.

· Advancing scholarship through a record of high-quality peer-reviewed funding and publications.

· Collaborating within and outside the School of Biomedical Sciences.

· Supervising students, postdoctoral trainees, and technical staff undertaking research projects.

· Participating in the activities of the department.

· Participating in HSC-wide, as well as local, national, and international service activities.

· Maintaining a safe work environment, including ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal legislation and the undertaking of risk assessments.

Minimum Qualification:

All candidates must have a PhD degree in genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or allied discipline, with a minimum of 1 year postdoctoral experience in molecular genetics, computational genetics, bioinformatics, or related disciplines.

The successful candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

· Track record of peer-reviewed publications.

· Strong background in translational genomics, transcriptomics, and/or epigenomics as they relate to genetic traits that impact human health and/or healthcare.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualification:

Preference will be given to the candidates with following additional qualifications:

· Mentoring experience with graduate students at the PhD level.

· Experience in teaching graduate and health professional students.

· Track record of success obtaining extramurally-funded research.

· Experience at the Assistant Professor level in an academic research environment.

· Translational research experience in one or more of the following human health applications: aging, Alzheimer’s Disease (or related dementias), health disparities.

· Management experience overseeing research lab staff-members.
