Postdoctoral Positions in Theoretical Astrophysics and Nuclear Physics

UC Berkeley

Job Description

One or more postdoctoral positions in Theoretical Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley, are expected to be available beginning Fall 2024.  The positions are for three years, contingent on satisfactory performance and funding.

We encourage applications from all subfields of nuclear physics and astrophysics.  Areas of special interest include:

  • Theoretical/computational astrophysics. This position would be connected with Berkeley’s program on explosive astrophysics, nucleosynthesis, and the modeling of supernovae, neutron star mergers, and other astronomical transients.
  • Low energy tests of fundamental symmetries, including double beta decay, EDM, and parity non-conservation.  The position would be affiliated with the DOE Topical Collaboration on New Physics and the N3AS Center.
  • Lattice QCD and related hadronic physics, including QCD spectroscopy.  The position would be associated with the DOE Topical Collaboration ExoHad.

The group includes faculty members Dan Kasen, Raúl Briceño, and Wick Haxton.  New postdocs will join a vibrant group of young scholars associated with the NSF Physics Frontier Center N3AS, the Berkeley Theoretical Astrophysics Center, the Berkeley Riken Center, and the Centre Pierre Binetruy, and the nuclear theory group at LBNL.

Successful candidates must have a recent Ph.D. in theoretical physics/astrophysics and the ability to work productively within Berkeley's diverse research environment. The anticipated annual salary is $76K, with a generous allowance for research and travel funds.

Please submit your CV, a publication list, a statement of research interest, and arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted online at AJO (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25804 ). Interested candidates are requested to submit materials before the deadline of December 8, 2023.

UC Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
