The mission of the Teaching + Learning Commons (The Commons) is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond: and, actively promote equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. The Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to enhance their teaching (inside and outside the classroom, in traditional as well as in digital teaching and learning settings); support undergraduate and graduate students to advance their success at UC San Diego and beyond; support graduate students to develop their professional development as instructors; and actively promote equity and inclusion within its organization and through its programs and services.

The Engaged Teaching Hub (ETH) is one of six hubs within The Commons. ETH promotes faculty and student success through programs and resources that support faculty and graduate students in their teaching roles. Our goal is to inspire and advance teaching excellence through evidence-based, learner-centered, and equitable teaching practices. The programs and services of ETH serve the entire university’s teaching community, including ladder-rank professors, teaching professors, non-Senate lecturers, and adjuncts, as well as graduate students working as teaching assistants and postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the faculty ranks in the future.

Directly reporting to the Senior Director of Instruction and Pedagogy of the Teaching and Learning Commons, who in turn reports to The Commons’ Faculty Director, the Director of Engaged Teaching collaborates with the Commons team to provide high-level services to the instructional community in order to advance an equity-focused student success ecosystem for student and faculty retention, success, and goal completion at UC San Diego.

Working under the direction of the Senior Director of Instruction and Pedagogy, the incumbent shares responsibility in providing leadership to support the entire university teaching community (ladder-rank professors, teaching professors, non-Senate lecturers, faculty adjuncts, graduate student instructional assistants, and postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the faculty ranks); building close relationships with academic departments, faculty, and units with a goal toward closing equity gaps for historically underrepresented, minoritized students through inclusive and equitable teaching practices, serving as a campus resource for information about teaching and learning; developing and facilitating learning communities; and promoting and disseminating research and scholarship on student learning and university teaching, including evidence based assessment practices.

As a leader in Engaged Teaching, the Director will promote teaching and learning as ongoing and collaborative processes of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection; design and facilitate educational development programs and services that are grounded in learner-centered, equity-minded, and anti-racist theories and practices; contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning; and promote a university culture that advances UC San Diego’s mission as a student-centered public research university.

As a member of the Teaching + Learning Commons, the incumbent is responsible for contributing to the Commons’ mission, vision, and strategic plan, as well as UC San Diego’s Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. This includes identifying priorities; setting short- and long-term goals; and implementing, monitoring, and assessing progress. The director also plays a key role in developing and sustaining a culture of equity and collaboration within the Commons and campus-wide, and developing and implementing methods for assessing the impact of the Teaching + Learning Commons initiatives and programs on student learning.

The Director has personnel responsibilities including hiring, training, and supervising professional and student staff, and operational responsibilities for Engaged Teaching, including budget management, program assessment and planning, and hiring, training, and supervision of professional and student staff.

• Strong knowledge of training and development programs and organization business strategies to ensure proper alignment of training programs. Demonstrated ability to create, implement, and maintain evidence-based instructional support programs for a wide range of disciplines at the university level. Experience establishing and sustaining new programs and initiatives. Experience working with the instructional and administrative needs of the liberal arts, STEM fields, and professional schools in STEM, Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences. Ability and skills to work collaboratively with faculty to translate evidence-based, equity- minded, anti-racist teaching strategies into practical, sustainable teaching practices at every stage of their career. Experience in developing, leading, and facilitating pedagogical workshops.

• Excellent program administration and project management expertise. Excellent project management skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize, organize, delegate, and coordinate complex tasks to ensure successful project completion while also allowing for conflicting schedules and changing priorities.

• Maintains effective professional relationships with organization department managers as well as other managers in the field. Ability to work collaboratively and strategically within the Commons, and campus-wide with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and other stakeholders across functions, levels and disciplines that collectively support the University’s instruction, research, and service missions. Strong record of dynamic interdisciplinary collaboration. Demonstrated ability to establish effective liaisons and collaborate effectively with diverse groups, incl. administrators, academic units, faculty, students, and staff, campus committees, as well as on and off campus organizations from a variety of disciplines and diverse cultural backgrounds with diverse goals.

• Strong understanding of the goals of the university and ways in which this position can support those goals. Familiarity with the academic mission of a research university.

• Strong, effective and clear verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong presentation skills. Exceptional oral and written communication and consulting skills to support a diverse group of UC San Diego instructors (with diverse cultural, educational, and teaching backgrounds, social identities, institutional roles, and disciplines). Experience speaking before large and small audiences and in communicating verbally one-on-one with faculty, staff, students, parents, business persons, etc.

• Strong management skills, including strong skill in directing and developing staff members. Excellent management and leadership skills. Knowledge of leadership theories and programs. Evidence of hiring, developing, supervising, and evaluating employees. Skilled in performance management and evaluations.

• Strong skills to conduct needs assessment and program development and delivery.

• Awareness of and commitment to equity and inclusive teaching practices that support diverse students. A demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice and to ensuring access and success of minoritized groups in higher education. Familiarity with educational scholarship related to equity-minded, anti-racist teaching practices, and commitment to inclusive teaching practices.

• Evidence of scholarly accomplishment and/or capacity to author research on teaching and learning. A record of peer-reviewed publications in the scholarship of teaching and/or the science of learning.

• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $71,000 - $160,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $34.00 - $76.63

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
