Position Summary:


The Department of Music at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University–New Brunswick, invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in choral conducting at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor to assume the duties of Director of Choral Activities. We seek an accomplished and dedicated musician and educator to lead our choral program within the vibrant and diverse environment of a large public research university. The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting both professional and university vocal ensembles, a strong teaching background, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusive artistic excellence. 
 
Leveraging its geographic placement between New York City and Philadelphia, the choral program housed in Mason Gross School of the Arts and reaching across Rutgers University includes a range of performing ensembles, a nationally recognized DMA program in Choral Conducting, and a strong tradition of performances on campus, in the community, and on tour. 
 
The Director of Choral Activities will provide artistic and administrative leadership for all aspects of the program while upholding our core values of inclusive excellence, collaboration, and community engagement. Duties associated with this role include: 
 
  • Lead and conduct university choral ensembles, demonstrating a high level of artistic excellence while fostering an inclusive learning environment for students 
  • Maintain an active artistic profile, which may include guest conducting engagements, solo performances, recordings, interdisciplinary collaborations, or other endeavors.
  • Deliver instruction in choral conducting, choral literature, and related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Oversee all aspects of the DMA program in Choral Conducting.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students within the Department of Music, as well as with other departments, on-campus organizations, and community organizations; facilitate interdisciplinary projects and performances.
  • Engage in service activities within the Department of Music, the university, and the choral community at large; participate in committees, student advising, and other departmental responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience:


Required: 
  • Graduate degree in choral conducting or a related field (or commensurate professional experience)
  •  Demonstrated evidence or significant potential of ongoing artistic activity such as conducting engagements, solo performances, recordings, arrangements, compositions, interdisciplinary collaborations, or other endeavors
  • Demonstrated commitment to university teaching and mentorship with a demonstrated record of or potential for effective and innovative vocal pedagogy, including vocal technique
  • Evidence of a commitment to diverse programming and work with diverse communities
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multifaceted academic environment, including the potential for collaboration in the Department of Music, Mason Gross School of the Arts, and the wider university
  • Experience conducting professional and/or university choral ensembles at a high level of artistry

 
Preferred:
  • Doctoral degree in choral conducting or a related field.
