Job Description:

The requirements for the Laboratory Technician position include performing molecular and cellular biology experiments (including but not limited to PCR, Western blot, molecular cloning, RNA and ribosome profiling library preparation, tissue culture, harvesting primary mouse neurons, immunofluorescence, and confocal imaging), collecting, organizing, and presenting data, training new members of the lab, assisting with establishing the laboratory, ordering laboratory supplies, and keeping an inventory of these supplies.

  • Experiments (wet bench). Conduct laboratory experiments designed by the laboratory head and help graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with their experiments. Perform PCR, Western blot, molecular cloning, RNA and ribosome profiling library preparation, tissue culture, harvesting primary mouse neurons, immunofluorescence, and confocal imaging approaches and prepare data for these studies.
  • Data Analysis, Presentation, and Management (dry bench). Use R, Excel, and Prism to statistically analyze and present data. Prepare posters for presentation at local, national, and international scientific meetings 1-2 times a year.
  • Maintenance of laboratory supplies. Negotiate with vendors and service providers on purchases of reagents and other laboratory supplies, maintain all supplies to make sure required materials are stocked, and monitor expenditures for compliance with cost principles to ensure projects stay within budget.
  • Equipment inventory. Negotiate with vendors and service providers on equipment purchases, repairs, and service contracts, maintain all equipment, and train all lab personnel in proper use of equipment.
  • Receiving and properly handling the reagents; basic repair and troubleshooting of scientific equipment; planning lab outings.
Expected Salary:

Commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or in an equivalent area with previous research experience.
