Overview

The Manager of Infusion Pharmacy oversees the daily pharmacy operations and staff of the Yawkey infusion clinics and ancillary areas including lab services to ensure high-quality patient care is provided in compliance with regulations, hospital policies and practices.

The pharmacy Manager coordinates and administers the pharmacy quality assurance and quality control initiatives as well as develop, implement, and administer pharmacy and institute policies and procedures.

The Pharmacy Manager works with Human Resources to interview and hire pharmacy staff. This individual coordinates the onboarding and orientation of new staff members as well as ensure ongoing training and competencies are met.

The manager is expected to develop and maintain effective working relationships with DFCI personnel and serve on departmental and interdepartmental committees.

It is expected that they be current regarding trends and developments in pharmacy practice and serve as a role model and mentor to the professional and technical staff.

This position’s work location is onsite, full-time on campus in Boston, MA.

Responsibilities

Management / Leadership:

Daily Oversight:

  • Oversees the staff and pharmacy operations and encourages excellence in work habits, inclusivity, maintaining the pharmacy, and customer service.
  • Assesses daily volume on infusion floors to ensure adequate coverage to meet needs and arranges pharmacy / nursing teams.
  • Rounds daily with pharmacists / technicians to address any concerns they have or issues that arise.
  • Works to identify, triage, and resolve any issues related to pharmacy, including patient delays.
  • Regularly meets with Nurse Directors and Managers to review issues as they arise on the infusion floors.
  • Meets with nurse directors and other staff as needed for Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, and Blood Donor Center.

Schedule / Payroll:

  • Sets the schedule for Pharmacy coverage for Yawkey.
  • Tracks vacation requests and approves based on staff availability.
  • Arranges coverage when employees call in with unexpected absences.
  • Approves weekly payroll
  • Holds regular staff meetings/huddles.
  • Acts as a liaison to and communicates regularly with providers, nursing leadership, infusion nurses, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Attends regular floor leadership and interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and ongoing review of pharmacy policies and procedures and ensures they are understood and followed by staff.
  • Manages the desensitization unit that reviews how medications are administered to allergenic patients. Assesses feasibility of proposed administration for new medications.  Works with nursing staff on continual process improvements in this area.

Quality / Safety:

  • Works in conjunction with other pharmacy managers, physicians, and/or nurses when a new medication or procedure change is introduced.
  • Leads the development of and implementation of the pharmacy’s quality assurance and quality control activities.
  • Verifies that quality controls are being completed daily, weekly, monthly; identifies gaps and takes corrective action to remedy.
  • Works with the Medication Safety Officer for review and/or follow up of safety reports and concerns related to the area.

Process Improvement:

  • Develops and implements efficient workflows within the pharmacy.
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives and projects.

Human Resources:

  • Works with HR to coordinate pharmacy interviews and hiring process.
  • Coordinates the onboarding and training and orientation and training of new pharmacy staff members and ensures proper documentation.
  • Coordinates ongoing training, competencies, and development and ensures proper documentation.
  • Performs ongoing and annual performance evaluations for the pharmacy staff.
  • Holds staff accountable for performance and behavior and identifies any issues and/or HR concerns and works with HR when needed to escalate to formal corrective action plan.

Committee Work:

  • Participates in the Pharmacy/Nurse committee that addresses and resolves patient care concerns.
  • Participate in departmental and Institute committees as assigned.

Materials Management:

  • Conducts inventory control on controlled substances. Oversees replenishment of the ADM machines and works with Nurse Managers/Directors to resolve any controlled substance discrepancies on the infusion floor.
  • Act as a liaison with materials management for the pharmacy department, including product review, supply review, and coordinating the pharmacy response to drug shortages once they are identified.
  • Provide oversight for the technology such as the SVC and automated dispensing cabinets.

Other Duties:

  • Stays current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice.
  • Other duties as assigned, including attending meetings and participating in Institute wide committees representing Pharmacy.
  • Performs duties of the Clinical Dispensing Pharmacist as needed to provide coverage for illness, meetings, staff vacations and during periods of peak volume.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Doctorate in Pharmacy from an accredited college of Pharmacy
  • 7 -10 years of hospital pharmacy experience and 3 years in a supervisory role
  • 4 years of oncology pharmacy experience preferred
  • Doctorate of Pharmacy and successful completion of an accredited pharmacy leadership residency program may substitute for experience requirement.
  • Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Certification in a related pharmacy specialty, or an advanced degree related to a specialty practice area preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to dispense medication accurately and efficiently, with particular attention to details.
  • Prioritization and organization of work under stress and time constraints.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills needed.
  • Ability to prevent and resolve intradepartmental and interdepartmental problems
  • Ability to make and implement decisions.
  • Must have supervisory training, organization, and time management skills in order to achieve departmental goals.
