Postdoctoral Research Associate - Quantum Materials Under Strain

Brookhaven Lab

Job Description

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Brookhaven National Laboratory hosts several departments and facilities that will be collaborating in this program:

  • The Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), which provides world-class capabilities for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) offering ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (200 eV – 2000 eV), full momentum-control, and novel opportunities for the sample-environment.
  • Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Department, which has a strong tradition in quantum materials and RIXS.

These departments, together with the Department of Physics at Harvard University, will be collaborating to study "Dynamics and Control in Quantum Materials."

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate that will incorporate applied strain instrumentation into our Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering apparatus to study strained quantum materials. These experiments will be complementary to ultrafast pump-probe studies performed within the research program. The experiments will be interpreted in a friendly collaborative team environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accomplish scientific research on strain-controlled excitonic and dimerized materials utilizing Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering.
  • Develop an in-situ strain-control device compatible with the ultra-high vacuum environment of the SIX Beamline.
  • Report the scientific results in academic papers and talks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, or related fields in the last 5 Years.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work both independently and as a part of a multi-institutional team.
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff.
  • A good understanding of the physics of quantum materials.
  • Strong data analysis skills.
  • Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in spectroscopic or scattering techniques such as x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, optical spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.
  • Experience with in-situ strain-control of quantum materials.
  • Familiarity with, or motivation to learn, facility proposal submission procedures and effective completion of experiments in fixed time slots using national-scale central facilities.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • While based primarily at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the position may require some domestic and international travel.

BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Plans
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Paid Time-off and Leave Programs (vacation, holidays, sick leave, paid parental leave)
  • 401(k) Plan
  • Flexible Work Arrangements
  • Tuition Assistance, Training and Professional Development Programs
  • Employee Fitness/Wellness & Recreation:  Gym/Basketball Courts, Weight Room, Fitness Classes, Indoor Pool, Tennis Courts, Sports Clubs/Activities (Basketball, Ping Pong, Softball, Tennis)

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
