Position description
The Gadgil Lab at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking Postdoctoral Scholars aiming to gain expertise in design, maturation, and pilot testing of electrochemical water-treatment technologies, that aim to improve access to safe drinking water to rural communities. Successful applicants will play a leading role in the pilot testing of two electro-chemical technologies that have been successfully field-tested on a limited scale. The Gadgil Lab has strong expertise in developing technologies for positive societal impact, and a culture supporting directed technology innovation and related scientific curiosity. The project will be funded by the National Alliance for Water Innovation, NAWI.
The applicants will gain important research experience in moving promising laboratory and field-research findings towards novel and societally impactful technologies. This includes gaining experience in the design, fabrication, experimental characterization and testing, attention to estimated techno-economic costs and benefits. The applicants will gain experience in working with a rural community at the field site, in introducing a new technology to the community. The applicant will also gain important and close exposure to managing a relatively complex project with multidisciplinary dimensions.
Support in seeking individual fellowships at the national and international level will be offered.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD or equivalent international degree, or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree granting program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
- PhD or equivalent international degree
- The candidate should have no more than three years of post-degree research experience.
Preferred qualifications
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (or closely related field)
- Excellent understanding of water chemistry and principles water-treatment at a graduate level (demonstrated with relevant coursework and good grades)
- Good familiarity with Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics. (demonstrated with relevant coursework and good grades)
- Extended laboratory experience conducting research in a wet-lab environment. (demonstrated with relevant wet-lab coursework or with wet-lab published research)
- Hands-on skills to construct, build, hardware (e.g., experience in Makers Lab)
- Excellent command of clear technical writing in English
- Experience of field-work based research of 6 months or longer
