Overview
The Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey (HGINJ) has embarked on a major initiative to encourage, foster, and support research in the life sciences within Rutgers University and the greater New Jersey community. As a part of this initiative, further research will be emphasized in five major core programs. Based on the strengths and expertise of the life sciences faculty, these programs include: Brain Disorders, Cancer Genomics, Computational Genetics, Reproductive Genetics, and Stem Cells. Each program is headed by a leading expert in the area of concentration.
The mission of the Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey (HGINJ) is to operate a world-renowned institute of excellence in human and medical genetics, to collaborate with and enhance research and training programs in the life sciences of Rutgers, and to facilitate scientific relationships with the private sector. HGINJ is comprised of prominent research scientists with specialties encompassing a broad range of topics. Areas of concentration currently include the following core programs: Brain Disorders, Cancer Genomics, Computational Genetics, Reproductive Genetics, and Stem Cells.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher II for the Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Supports research in an internally and externally funded program investigating mechanisms of brain disorders, schizophrenia in particular.
  • Conducts genomic and transcriptomic studies using cellular models relevant to neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration.
  • Designs, plans, performs experiments in the field described above.
  • Collects and organizes data in proper form such as databases, conducts data processing.
  • Operates complex instrumentation, such as liquid handling robot, and will be able to teach and supervise the work of other lab personnel, students and trainees.
  • Organizes the workflow of the facility, perform main operations and data processing.
  • Manages the database, process the data and prepare reports.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 5 years of research experience in academia, and experience mentoring and teaching students.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 10 years of research experience in academia, and experience mentoring and teaching students.
  • Experience with lab automation, such as using liquid handling robots, sample management automation systems, familiarity with LIMS/databases, experience in writing Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and User Guidelines, understanding principles and experience in Nucleic Acid storage, handling and processing, proficiency in DNA and RNA purification workflows, experience in Single Cell library preparation and quantification, growing and maintaining primary cells (preferably mesenchymal stem cells like CNON).
Equipment Utilized
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office.
  • Must be familiar with PCR and qPCR instruments, Agilent’s TapeStation Automated Electrophoresis Instrument, RNA isolation systems, autoclaves, Windows PC’s, liquid handling robots (like Hamilton STARlet).
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Able to stand, lift, bend.
  • Able to occasionally lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands.
  • Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors and toxic chemicals.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
