Position Focus:

Provide technical mass spectrometry support in an existing comprehensive analytical instrumentation facility at West Campus.

Instruct faculty, graduate student, and postdoctoral researchers in the use of various mass spectrometry and chromatography research instruments. Maintain several mass spectrometers and optical spectrometers along with the associated computer systems and network. Work with researchers to develop methods for macro-molecular structure elucidation and support a university-wide service for the high-resolution accurate mass characterization.

Candidates must have experience with one or more of the following disciplines involving mass spec instrumentation. Listed in order of priority: Proteomics (using Orbitrap instruments), Metabolomics/Small molecule analysis using High resolution mass specs (QToF -quadrupole time of flight), QQQ (triple quadrupole) using targeted or untargeted analysis, Lipidomics, or Intact Mass.


Essential Duties

1. Participates in the planning, conceiving, designing and implementation of highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project 2. Solves engineering and design problems to ensure that equipment meets the objective of the study 3. Develops reports and proposals for research project outlining machinery available, direction of the design, and development of new instrumentation. 4. Determines available resources such as electrical and mechanical components and equipment. 5. Develops cost and time estimates for specific equipment design. Ensures time and cost estimates are met. 6. Supervises and monitors work of professionals and solicits consulting work from outside labs 7. Manages quality control of work performed on research projects. 8. Teaches research support theories and design. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Broad knowledge and hands-on training in the theory and practice of mass spectrometry, including practical experience operating, maintaining and repairing mass spectrometers.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using mass spectrometers as well as processing and interpreting mass spectrometry data.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated skill and understanding of state-of-art mass spectrometry including the ability to provide technical support for collaborative design and execution of modern mass spectrometry methods.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Mechanical and electronic skills relevant to maintenance, repair and modification of scientific instruments. Computer skills for instrument operation and data analysis.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Good interpersonal and communication. Skills to facilitate working with faculty and students to assist them in operating instruments and interpreting data.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

PhD in Chemistry, Biology, or related field. Proven ability and experience with proteomics-focused instrumentation (e.g. orbitrap MS, nano-HPLC) and software (e.g. MassHunter, Proteome, Skyline). Proven ability and experience with other analytical techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, including operating and maintaining these instruments and associated computers and software.
