    Salary range: The UC postdoc salary scales set the minimum pay determined by experience level at appointment. The current minimum salary range for this position is $64,480 – $74,569. Salaries above the minimum may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

    Position description

    The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to develop novel approaches to the unbinned analysis of collider data using Machine Learning. These developments will be used to explore Quantum Chromodynamics in new ways, using archived Deep Inelastic Scattering data from the H1 experiment at HERA and simulations for the future Electron Ion Collider. The research will be carried out within the group of Ben Nachman at UC Berkeley and LBNL, in collaboration with the groups of Miguel Arratia (UC Riverside) and Peter Jacobs (UC Berkeley/LBNL).

    The duties of this position include:

    • Perform high-dimensional cross section measurements with machine learning using archival deep inelastic scattering data and possibly simulations of the future Electron Ion Collider
    • Develop software infrastructure for applying, publishing, accessing, and reusing unbinned measurements
    • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration
    • Interact with investigators at UC Berkeley / Berkeley lab and other institutes working on similar or related scientific problems
    • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level
    • Prepare research papers for publication
    • Prepare research findings at seminars and conferences
    • May mentor undergraduate and graduate students
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    • PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    • PhD (or equivalent international degree)
    • No more than two years of post-degree research experience by start date

    Preferred qualifications
    • Ability to communicate effectively, and to lead/contribute to a software project
    • Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group
    • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results
    • Desired, but not required: experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, high performance computing environments, and other statistical learning tools and theory
