This position is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.

Purpose

The ideal postdoc will conduct a fundamental and applied feasibility study on combined passive and active electromagnetic (EM) monitoring.  The successful candidate will employ laboratory setups, forward and inverse numerical solutions of Maxwell equations, make recommendations for the EM survey design at test sites, and then help in conducting field demos and analyzing survey results.   The successful candidate may also be asked to assist in core flood studies and geomechanical lab tests to study the combined effects, and then model their usefulness for various subsurface applications.

Responsibilities

  • Electromagnetic laboratory experiments and rock characterization.
  • Forward and inverse numerical solutions of Maxwell equations and geomechanical modeling.
  • EM survey design and implementation at a test site.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and present at meetings, and conferences.


Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in geophysics, electrical engineering, geological sciences, petroleum engineering, or equivalent field with expertise in EM geophysics, knowledge of reservoir geology, and oil production. Programming skills, particularly in Python or C. Write reports and papers in international journals. Proven capacity for innovative, creative scientific analysis. Ability to give presentations to industrial affiliates and academic audiences. Proven publication, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to work both independently and effectively in a group. Ability to work effectively with researchers from different disciplines, including engineers and geologists, in office, laboratory, and field environments. The degree must have been received within 3 years from the date of application.


Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of numerical inversion techniques of the Maxwell equations and machine learning. Understanding the complexity of EM and laboratory experiments involving flow through porous rocks and specimens. Knowledge of commercial EM software programs and field operations. Understanding the importance of knowledge transfer to industry and orienting the research to realistic problems and challenges.  Ability to synthesize complicated concepts to basic components, and communicate them to non-technical stakeholders. Understanding geomechanics and fluid dynamics could be advantageous.  Experience with core flooding and geomechanical equipment is desired. An entrepreneurial spirit is a plus.


Salary Range

$65,000 - $70,000

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
