Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): 
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by time of appointment. Experience with CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field by time of appointment. Publication record. Familiarity with genetic tools development and experience cultivating marine protists or other microbial eukaryotes preferred but not essential.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the Stony Brook University
School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and Department of Ecology and Evolution under the supervision of Principal Investigators Dr. Jackie Collier and Dr. Joshua Rest. The project is a collaborative research venture with the Archibald Lab at the Institute for Comparative Genomics at Dalhousie, diving deep into the world of symbiosis using the marine thraustochytrid Aurantiochytrium limacinum as the model organism. The selected candidate will contribute to the overall conceptual goal of dissecting cellular and metabolic factors influencing obligate endosymbioses and the determinants of successful (endo)symbiont-to-host gene transfer. Successful candidates will have the ability to work in a collaborative work environment and have strong written and oral communication skills.

Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

      Test and develop both expression vector and ribonucleoprotein-based approaches for delivering CRISPR gene editing components to Aurantiochytrium limacinum .

      Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, use CRISPR-Cas9 editing to create specific targeted mutants, starting with a carotenoid-less mutant.

      In collaboration with the Archibald lab, conduct naturalistic lateral gene transfer (LGT) experiments for adding the capacity for carotenoid biosynthesis to carotenoid-free protists.

      Develop and apply high-throughput CRISPR-based mutagenesis screens.

      Write manuscripts for publication in appropriate specialized journals.

      Assist with developing proposals for external support.

      Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
