The Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER), has a funded postdoctoral position immediately available for a highly motivated, skilled, and independent researcher to take part in a post-disaster recovery/long-term adaptation design and planning project assisting the town Ft. Myers Beach following Hurricane Ian. This project is funded by the Collaboratory of Southwest Florida. The project will build on work conducted by the Florida Resilient Cities (FRC) program within FIBER, working with communities across the state to provide vulnerability assessment, community-focused planning, and visioning and design services to support coastal adaptation. Our research is currently funded by the National Academies of Sciences, NASA, NSF, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, and others. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty from FIBER and across the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP), and work alongside passionate graduate students, post-docs, and research faculty.

Position Details: Duties of this appointment will focus on an adaptation planning and design services project for Ft. Myers Beach over the course of 1 year. This will include assisting with a GIS-based vulnerability assessment, administering a series of community workshops, and development of design alternatives for adaptation action areas within the town. Additional tasks will include research into implementation grants and assisting faculty with grant proposals. Leadership roles within the project focus areas will be available based on experience and skills. Additional opportunities within FIBER including teaching can be considered depending on opportunities that emerge. The position is limited to 1-year however if funding is renewed and based on performance, the position could be extended for as long as 4-years.

Expected Salary:

$58,000.00

Minimum Requirements:

A Ph.D., Doctorate of Design (DDes), or other terminal degree within the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, or planning.

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly motivated individuals with a strong background in hazards planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and resilience. Individuals should also have evidence of professional experience in the fields of architecture/planning/landscape architecture, demonstrate research productivity, effective English written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently. Position will require frequent trips to Fort Myers Beach (a 4-hour drive) so a valid driver’s license is required.
