Established on July 1, 2018, the Department of Health Metrics Sciences is the world's first academic department devoted to the science of health metrics. The Department of Health Metrics Sciences and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill one full-time faculty position at the Professor without tenure (WOT) level. Anticipated start is Winter quarter in Academic Year 2023-24.

About IHME

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization that produces cutting-edge scientific and policy-relevant quantitative evidence for use by policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders. Based at the University of Washington, IHME's ongoing work provides high-quality measurement of the world's major health problems, assesses how these problems are being addressed, and identifies how best to dedicate resources to maximize health improvement. IHME's approach maximizes cross-disciplinary, quantitative analytic approaches and methods aimed at incorporating all relevant data in order to produce policy-relevant results using ground-breaking science.

About the Position

The incumbent will be a leading member of the Clinical Informatics team and establish a team working on disease burden and risk factor estimation for excluded populations. The Clinical Informatics team processes inpatient, outpatient, and claims data for over 55 countries, representing 3 billion clinical encounters over 30 years. The team's primary objective is to produce population-level incidence and prevalence rates of disease or injury by year, sex, age, and location for use in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) study and other IHME research projects.

The incumbent will conduct analysis of big data, evaluate and develop research methods and tools, and encourages multidisciplinary research for innovative developments. They are expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them. They are also expected to contribute to the expansion of clinical informatics research for the Institute, including but not limited to consultation with subject area experts around the world, engagement with external partners, and the expansion of the network of collaborators.

The incumbent will identify and generate data and establish transdisciplinary methods to enable disease burden and risk factor estimation for excluded populations including people experiencing homelessness, forced migration, imprisonment and sex work. They will work to establish risk factor estimation methods relevant to measuring the multiple and overlapping disadvantages experienced by excluded populations. The incumbent is expected to establish and grow a team focused on excluded populations and work inclusion health experts and experts by experience from around the globe.

The incumbent will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $265,008 commensurate with experience.

Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1- June 30). Faculty appointed WOT do not hold tenure because all or part of their annual University-administered salary is derived from sources other than regularly appropriated state funds. Except for this distinction, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members at those ranks.

The successful applicants will have an MD, PhD, or foreign equivalent in medicine, epidemiology, population health, health metrics, biostatistics, public health, statistics, health informatics, health policy, data science, data engineering, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in health metrics including statistical modeling using and synthesizing multiple and large data sets.
