The Assistant Project Scientist in Dr. Jay M. Lees laboratory in the UCLA Lung Cancer Research Program will perform independent research to study the immunology and carcinogenesis of lung cancer. He/She will also be responsible for supervising graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, managing the laboratory, grant writing and assisting with the preparation of grant proposal and annual reports. The Assistant Project Scientist will also conduct preclinical studies in animal models and in vitro studies. The responsibilities include everything that is needed to run Dr. Lee's lab including but not limited to oversight of all trainees that rotate to the lab, equipment/mice purchasing, receipt/financial maintenance with fund manager, purchase/transfer/usage of mice in the lab, and attend to laboratory management, etc. The applicant must possess the highest level of integrity, teamwork, and ability to collaborate with members of other laboratories. This position will entail collaborative work in the Lung Cancer Research Program with members of Drs. Steven Dubinett, Mike Palazzolo, and Dylan Conklin laboratories. This position requires onsite/in person work during daily business hours and weekly laboratory meetings with the Principal Investigator. Clarity in purpose and communication are essential attributes.
This position requires a Ph.D in scientific discipline and a minimum of 5 years of experience in cell signaling in lung disease. The Assistant Project Scientist position is a 12 month, non-senate position.
Specific Responsibilities include:
The assigned project is focused on discovering the mechanisms involved in immunology of lung diseases, specifically to understand the molecular signals affecting immune-oncology targets to alter the susceptibility of premalignant cells to checkpoint inhibitors. The principle objective is to find the molecular mechanism behind the resistance development to make immunotherapy more effective. Utilizing the in vitro human premalignant cell culture model and also using in vivo transgenic mice model Kras, Kras;LKB (KL), the objective is to decipher the signaling mechanisms in regulating PDL1 expression during premalignant stage and its subsequent progression to tumor. This involves molecular and immunologic approaches, in vitro/in vivo assays, ELISA, Westernblots, qPCR, microscopy, cell culture. Responsibility of this position include study design, executing in vitro studies and in vivo studies, literature review and manuscript/grant preparation.
Additional Duties:
Grant writing and grant submission; supervision of undergraduates, graduate students and oversight and training of new postdoctoral trainees in the lab; Managing the lab and safety management; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, efficiently and effectively; Ability to work with regulatory agencies and insure lab procedure, equipment and space compliance; ability to work independently on scientific projects; assist with preparation of grant proposals; preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. Candidate is required to communicate well with scientist's worldwide; they should have 5 years research experience in lung biology and immunotherapy in an academic setting or equivalent; candidate should have extensive experience in lung cancer; they should have publications (in high impact journals); The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision. He she needs to have the ability to help and train various personnel in molecular biology and immunology and make significant contribution to the design and execution of other laboratory member's experiments.
