Job Description:

Professional writing tutors assist graduate students who are working on graduate-level projects. On the level of composition, professional tutors guide students in addressing global and local writing issues. Tutors do not edit student work but introduce effective strategies to help students overcome barriers to the clear expression of their ideas and arguments. Professional tutors draw on their own experiences as former graduate students and the skills they have acquired in mastering long-form writing (as well as data-driven research) to aid students who are less familiar with the rigors of such projects.
Professional Writing Tutors have the following duties or responsibilities:
1) Professional writing tutors provide expertise when working with graduate students on many kinds of composing projects (print, digital, multimodal) and in many different genres (e.g. term papers, theses, dissertations, grant proposals, job application materials). Tutors serve as a resource and guide to emphasize each writer's long-term development by providing feedback about global and local writing issues. (70% of the time)
2) Professional writing tutors participate in activities that support the Writing Commons operations and that align with the institutional goals of improving graduate student retention and graduation rates. These activities include participating in regular training, maintaining appointment records, building relationships with academic departments, and contributing to program assessment projects. (15% of the time)
3) Beyond writing advice, professional writing tutors provide professional expertise to help graduate students and postdoctoral graduates manage significant, non-course-related undertakings such as conference presentations, grant proposals, personal statements needed to advance academic careers, job materials, and master's theses and dissertations. They aid in interpreting the requirements of these challenging but vital projects and guide students to successful outcomes, including graduation with an advanced degree. (15% of the time)
Graduate writing professional tutors are selected based on their specialized knowledge of their particular field. When making hiring decisions, an attempt is made to hire tutors with a range of disciplinary expertise.
