ABOUT THE YAKIMA AREA ARBORETUM

Founded in 1967, the Yakima Area Arboretum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and an important institution of culture, heritage, and education for Central Washington. Hundreds of people visit the Arboretum each week to connect with nature, volunteer, go for a walk, attend an event, and/or to celebrate a wedding, quinceañera or host a business meeting. The Yakima Area Arboretum is also one of Central Washington’s top tourist attractions. People travel from all over the northwest to visit and learn about our curated collection of trees, shrubs and display gardens. Funding to support the Arboretum is obtained through a variety of sources, including memberships, donations, fundraising events, and the rental of the Jewett Interpretive Center and grounds for special events.

JOB SUMMARY

The Yakima Area Arboretum’s Event and Volunteer Coordinator (EVC) will help carry out the mission of the Arboretum by performing duties related to Arboretum sponsored events, membership management, fundraising, public relations, and volunteer coordination. Our new EVC will be working in collaboration with Arboretum staff, members, volunteers, and community members. The successful candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, enjoy working with people, and attentive to detail.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

· Work with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other staff to help plan, execute, and provide follow-up correspondence, and evaluation for all Arboretum fundraisers, classes and special events.

· Assist the Executive Director with appeal letters, and marketing materials to support our many events and programs.

· Help maintain and update event software and databases.

· Manage and schedule our many volunteers to support Arboretum special events, tours, and staffing needs, including working with court-ordered community service volunteers.

· Conduct and/or arrange for volunteer orientation, training and recognition events. Write job descriptions and recruit volunteers when necessary.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

· Enjoys working with people and is comfortable talking on the phone.

· Proficient with Google Docs, MS Word and Excel, and comfortable learning new Cloud based software.

· Ability to prioritize, multi-task and follow through with minimal direction.

· Attention to detail, project management skills, and being highly organized a must.

· Flexible with job assignments and willingness to pitch in when/where needed.

· Bachelor’s Degree, AA degree and/or experience a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed mostly in a small office environment, with frequent interruptions, and involves heavy use of a computer. Expect frequent in-person visitors and phone calls from facility renters, tourists, volunteers, members, and potential donors. Each staff person is expected to do some cross training in other office positions. Occasional use of a personal vehicle to reach offsite event locations, pick up donations, and/or to shop for supplies, etc. May lift up to 30 pounds.

WORK SCHEDULE

Full-time: Tuesday – Saturday 9am to 5pm, with some evenings and weekends to coincide with special events.

PAY & BENEFITS

$16.00 to $18 hour depending upon experience and education, plus vision, dental and medical insurance for the employee, retirement plan, and after a six-month probation period, 12 paid vacation days for the first 1- 4 years of service.
