Position Summary

This exciting role as a Postdoctoral Research Associate will be working with Dr. Marcus Foston at Washington University as part of the Center for Engineering MechanoBiology (CEMB) and Synthetic biology Manufacturing of Advanced materials Research Center (SMARC). In this role, research will be performed as a member of a team of synthetic biologists, material science, technologists, students and more. The postdoctoral associate will perform research to develop and deploy scanning probe microscopy methods to understand recombinant peptide-peptide interaction, stiffing behavior of recombinant protein free standing films, nanoscale mechanochemical correlations and heterogeneity in plant cell wall and animal extracellular matrix (ECM), nanomechanical properties in the interphase of cellulose nanocrystal composites, and more.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements research protocols; designs safety procedures; adapts new procedures, methods or instrumentation relative to research procedures.
  • Collects, prepares and analyzes research data; keeps a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data; maintains computer database of research data; tabulates and displays data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation; uses graphics and statistical software to analyze and present data.
  • Supervises other personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participates in training of fellows, residents, students and volunteer workers as needed.
  • Searches pertinent scientific literature as needed.
  • Assists with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment and with general maintenance of laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

PhD.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Material science & engineering experience.
  • Experience with atomic force microscopy.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
