Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of technical duties involved in laboratory setup, instrument and aquaria maintenance, and experiment assistance in support of research-oriented activities at Duke University Marine Lab.

Work Performed

The successful applicant will facilitate the set up and maintenance of molecular and seawater laboratory spaces that will be used to investigate the effects of climate change on marine invertebrates in the Wong Lab at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina. Responsibilities will include receiving purchases, setting up equipment, maintaining inventory of materials, organizing data and documents, aquaria and marine invertebrate care, and general laboratory upkeep. Other duties will include training and supervising new laboratory personnel as well as assisting student and/or postdoctoral research projects (e.g., conducting experiments, protocol documentation, data collection, logistical planning/preparation, and occasional participation in the field). The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to conduct an independent research project with the potential to develop the work into a paper for publication. The position will be under the mentorship of Dr. Juliet Wong (Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University), and offers the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in molecular ecology, ecophysiology, and developmental biology. Other duties as assigned.

WORK LOCATION

Work takes place in Beaufort, NC.

TERM

Six months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. The position offers attractive working conditions and a competitive salary with full benefits.

Required Qualifications at this Level


Education/Training:

Work requires an Associate's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other science related scientific field. 


Experience:

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and team-oriented person capable of working both independently and within collaborative groups. Prior experience working with marine aquaria and/or in a molecular biology laboratory is preferred but not required. The candidate must possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
