Job Description

The Computational Sciences Center at NREL has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher on a newly funded project on learning reduced models under extreme data conditions for design and rapid decision-making in complex systems. The researcher will be part of a multi-institution and interdisciplinary team that has funding through the DOE Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research Program. The goal of the project is to leverage high-fidelity physics solvers to collect distributed and streamed data that are informative about rare events and use this data to learn reduced models of physical phenomenon of interest to offshore wind.

The postdoctoral researcher will work with NREL staff and external collaborators on developing algorithms and tools for a paradigm of data-driven modeling of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) representative of wind farm physics. The responsibilities for this position include:

·       Developing in situ pipelines to handle vast volumes of data (in the terabyte range) streamed by NREL's advanced wind farm physics modeling software,

·       Developing active data acquisition techniques that can collect data in regions of rare events,

·       Applying dimensionality reduction techniques for data analysis of large-scale turbulent flows,

·       Learning reduced models of turbulent flows using streamed and distributed data,

·       Physical correction of reduced models using statistical and machine learning techniques.

In addition, the successful candidate will be able to work independently, as well as in a large collaborative team with researchers from NREL, academia, and other national laboratories. Join our dynamic team and help build the future of wind energy simulations on the next generation of supercomputers.

  • A deep understanding of numerical methods for PDEs for the solution of large linear systems arising in turbulent-flow simulations,
  • Proficiency in modern C++ and Python programming,
  • Experience processing large data sets,
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and data reduction,
  • Experience developing parallel software for hybrid-CPU/GPU architectures,
  • Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

·       Knowledge of machine learning fundamentals,

·       Experience training and evaluating machine learning models,

·       Experience designing APIs for multi-library integration,

·       Experience in a Linux-based high-performance computing environment,
