Brookhaven Lab

Job Description

Position Description

The Instrumentation Division has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate. The candidate will be expected to take a leading role in the group activities including the design, characterization, and development of detector materials for reactor antineutrino detection. This position is for an initial term of two years and would be under the direction of Dr. Minfang Yeh.

Brookhaven has leadership positions in scintillator development for remote detection of antineutrinos emitted from nuclear power reactors, using a Water Cerenkov or Water-based Liquid Scintillator Detector. Additionally, the group is a member of several collaborations to develop and build a variety of scintillator detectors for neutrino flavor research, dark matter searches, and other rare event physics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participation in neutrino, nonproliferation, double-beta decay, and dark matter experiments
  • Benchtop and prototyping development (both 1-ton and 30-ton) for feasibility study of kiloton-scale scintillator detectors
  • Data analysis and simulation

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in nuclear physics, particle physics, nuclear chemistry, or related field
  • Experience in a variety of experimental techniques such as nuclear detection methods, detector installation, liquid scintillator physics, development, and characterization.
  • Domestic and international travel is required

Additional Information:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $68,400 - 90,825- $113,250.
