Computational Science Postdoctoral Scholar

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division has an opening for a Computational Science Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.
The Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) develops and applies advanced computational methodologies to solve large-scale scientific and engineering problems arising in DOE mission areas involving energy, environment, and industrial technology. The primary focus of CCSE researchers is on designing algorithms for multiscale, multiphysics problems described by nonlinear systems of partial differential equations (PDE), and in developing implementations of algorithms that target current and next-generation massively parallel computational architectures. CCSE researchers work collaboratively with application scientists to develop state-of-the-art solution methodologies in these fields.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for developing new numerical algorithms and computational models to simulate the dynamics of particulate materials, complex fluids and multiphase flows by incorporating an accurate representation of their microstructure and rheology. The proposed approach involves integrating a particle-scale representation such as the discrete element method (DEM), a coarse-grained representation such as particle-in-cell (PIC), and a continuum-scale PDE representation of these materials using the tools of adaptive mesh and algorithm refinement, and data-driven machine learning methods. The target applications include industrial technologies such as bioreactors, advanced manufacturing, and other DOE mission areas involving energy and environment. The outcome of this research will be a multiscale modeling framework that can simulate a wide variety of particulate materials and complex fluids, and is performant on manycore/GPU-based high performance computing (HPC) platforms.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop numerical algorithms for coupling particle, coarse-grained and continuum representations of multiphase flows, complex fluids and particulate materials.

  • Incorporate data-driven machine learning methods in existing hydrodynamics and multiphase solvers for multiscale modeling.

  • Conduct large-scale simulations on HPC platforms in application spaces such as bioreactors and advanced manufacturing.

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team environment including mathematicians, computer/computational scientists, and domain scientists.

  • Author peer-reviewed journal articles and contribute to research proposals.

  • Present research outcomes at national and international scientific meetings and conferences.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Sciences/Engineering within the last 3 years, with a strong research background in applied mathematics, computational methods and scientific computing.

  • Demonstrated research experience in computational fluid dynamics, and modeling of particulate materials, soft materials or complex fluids using continuum, particle, or hybrid continuum-particle numerical methods.

  • Knowledge of soft matter physics, granular physics and/or polymer physics.

  • Experience with data-driven approaches such as machine learning and Gaussian process regression.

  • Keen interest in extending mathematical and scientific computing techniques to new problems.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $6431-$8642 and is expected to start at $7843 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
