Research Associate/Scientist, Purdue Puentes Project, Purdue University

The Purdue Puentes Project (PPP) is seeking a research associate/scientist to lead the Purdue Puentes Project, a longitudinal mixed-method study of rural Latine youth (N=306; ages 10-15) in immigrant families in the Midwest (including farmworker families). This research aims to advance understanding of the risk factors that are detrimental to the health and well-being of rural Latine youth and to identify resilience processes that counteract salient life stressors. The NIMHD-funded, interdisciplinary project is headed by Dr. Yumary Ruiz (Associate Professor, Public Health) and Dr. Zoe Taylor (Associate Professor, Human Development and Family Science) at Purdue University.

The postdoctoral research scientist will be supported and report to the project Principal Investigators. This position is appropriate for a candidate who has and wants to gain additional skills in project management and evaluation (rather than an academic career). The candidate’s primary responsibility will involve directing and management of the research project (at least 75-80% of their time dedicated to these activities). Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining data collection and retention efforts, supervising a 20-25 person team of staff and graduate and undergraduate students, organizing and managing schedules, coordinating team meetings and communications, and overseeing administrative tasks. This position has two full-time staff assistants aiding the project director in these efforts.

 


Job Responsibilities

The postdoctoral research scientist will also be responsible for maintaining IRB reports and protocols, making sure lab procedures and protocols are followed and updated, and (with the assistance of the PIs) generating annual reports to the NIH. They may also be involved in new grant proposals and manuscripts. (20-25%). Within these activities, opportunities will exist for the research scientist to foster their individual professional interests and develop new skills. The research scientist will join a team with 2 other postdocs (whose role is data management and manuscript preparation). 

Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse professional and community populations. Evening hours and some weekend hours will occasionally be required. Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred but not required. Minimum one-year commitment and residence in West Lafayette is required. The position has the potential to be renewed for a second year, contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.


Qualifications Include:
  • A Ph.D. in Public Health/ Human Development & Family Studies/ Developmental Psychology/ or another related field completed by the start of the employment.
  • Experience working with Latine youth and families, immigrant families, or marginalized populations.
  • Experience in the coordination and direction of a complex and dynamic scientific research project
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient at management organization (especially Excel, as well as other software such as Teams, Basecamp) 
  • Must be detail oriented, with excellent organizational skills, and able to prioritize multiple tasks. 
  • Strong writing, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of IRB, grant writing and other institutions is preferred.
  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative data methods is beneficial.
