Summary of Job Duties:

The Associate Staff Scientist provides support for the Alge Lab in the Department of Pediatrics. Applicant will be responsible for routine management of daily operations of a laboratory investigating kidney disease and will be expected to independently conduct laboratory experiments under direction of the laboratory principal investigator. Key responsibilities include routine laboratory work, ordering supplies, preparation of media and reagents, performing assays that utilize common molecular biology techniques, cell culture, maintenance of mouse colonies, performing rodent survival surgery, processing rodent organs and tissues for analysis, and processing patient-derived biospecimens for analysis. This position will interact with principal investigator, faculty researchers and other research staff, postdoctoral fellows, medical trainees, and graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children’s campuses.

Qualifications:

Education: Doctoral degree in Biology or related field

Experience: Five years of relevant experience, including progressive staff management and project management experience

Preferred qualification: Post doctoral fellowship, experience assisting in grant-writing, and experience with mouse handling preferred.


Additional Information:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (list primary functions of the position with the percent of time generally allocated to each; percent of time must equal 100%)

Data Collection, Experimentation, and Analysis 
•    Utilize molecular biology techniques including extraction of DNA, RNA, and protein extractions, PCR, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting
•    Sample preparation for transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analysis
•    Cell culture and in vitro assays
•    Light and immunofluorescence microscopy of cultured cells and tissue sections
•    Mouse husbandry and routine procedures including tail snipping, ear tagging, collection of urine and blood, and necropsy
•    Handling of patient-derived biospecimens and processing specimens for downstream analysis
•    Perform routine laboratory work and experiments
•    Accurate and timely record-keeping of experimental procedures
•    Data processing, analysis, charting/graphing, and presentation as directed by PI
•    Preparation of figures for publication
•    Literature searches to find research information on related procedures and previous studies

Lab Management – 
•    Placing orders (obtaining quotes, filling and submitting ordering forms, tracking order status and receiving orders)
•    Maintaining records of laboratory inventories (reagents and supplies)
•    Responsibilities for routine cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment and cleaning/sterilization of labware
•    Training of new employees and/or trainees in operation of laboratory and basic techniques such as cell culture
•    Overseeing staff compliance with the University, State and Federal guidelines for the safe operation of a laboratory
•    Provides support to the PI for grant submission and reporting
