Postdoctoral - Decarbonization Pathways and Environmental Impact Assessment

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Earth & Environmental Sciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow - Decarbonization Pathways and Environmental Impact Assessment to join the team.
Join our team to help build the next generation of data-driven environmental and social assessment tools to enable decision-makers to evaluate decarbonization pathways, while fostering sustainable and equitable development and minimizing unintended consequences. This will be a bottom-up approach and include a broad range of efforts from stakeholder engagement to data gathering, integration, wrangling, and mining.

In this role, you will be working on developing standards and performance measures to assess the regional environmental and social impact of the energy transition and decarbonization, identify challenges and opportunities, and co-produce solutions to enable a faster and more effective energy transition process. Two main components of this role include

Market Research and Co-Production: You will help plan and host a series of engagement and roundtable discussions with various stakeholders, including energy producers, regulators, researchers, NGOs, and community groups. The goal is to identify challenges and opportunities to inform scientific inquiries to ensure an equitable and inclusive transition.

Data Wrangling, Integration, and Mining: You will acquire and integrate several readily available data sets such as Bloomberg, permit data, and others to better evaluate market penetration, risk identification, and rate of innovation. This data will help us to develop accurate and reliable standards and benchmarks for the energy transition.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct comprehensive market research on decarbonization pathways: collect, process, integrate, and analyze data sets on patents, investment, permitting, and implementation of various decarbonization pathways and clean energy solutions.

  • Identify and evaluate the potential social and environmental effects of some of these solutions (this can be done partly through a comprehensive literature review).

  • Review and summarise corporate ESG strategies and investments.

  • Help plan and host a series of engagement and roundtable discussions with various stakeholders.

  • Author reports and peer-reviewed journal papers, and contribute to grant proposals.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in environmental engineering, systems, computer science, or related technical disciplines.

  • Prior experience with data mapping and identification, analytics, wrangling, integration, and mining.

  • Programming experience in Python and/or R.

  • Familiarity with Natural Language Processing.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven track record of peer-reviewed publications.

  • A healthy dose of curiosity and critical thinking.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment and/or Economic Assessment Tools.

  • Interest in stakeholder mapping and engagement.

  • Ability to work with multiple data sources.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

To be considered applications should include:

  • In addition to your CV, we request candidates to provide five points outlining how their skill set aligns with the requirements of the position.
