The Instructor will operate with a high degree of independence to carry out bench research examining transcriptional control of cell fate decisions during early embryogenesis using zebrafish as an animal model system. The Instructor will be responsible for independently designing, executing, interpreting and trouble-shooting experiments involving standard molecular, biochemical and genetic methods, as well as standard bioinformatics analyses. The Instructor will also collaborate with existing core facilities to carry out transcriptomic and epigenomic single cell experiments and to analyze the resulting data. The Instructor will assist in the training and advising of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and will regularly update Dr Sagerstrom on progress towards research goals.

  • Participate in the design of research projects
  • Develop and implement new research protocols
  • Carry out research projects independently
  • Trouble-shoot and problem-solve as needed
  • Tabulate research data and keep a detailed laboratory notebook
  • Interpret experimental results
  • Carry out animal experimentation (zebrafish) as related to research project (generating transgenic and mutant lines, chemical treatments)
  • Prepare tissues, cell cultures, etc. for testing
  • Perform standard molecular biology methods (cloning, PCR)
  • Perform standard biochemical methods (Western blots, IP, gel electrophoresis)
  • Perform standard imaging analysis (immunostaining, RNA-FISH)
  • Develop and maintain research databases
  • Apply standard bioinformatics tools to analyze genomic (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq) data
  • Other duties as assigned by Dr Sagerstrom

Communicate research results (10%):

  • Present results at lab meetings
  • Present results at project meetings such as research in progress talks
  • Present results at (inter)national meetings

Why Join Us:

The Sagerstrom research group is part of a highly cohesive academic unit in the Section of Developmental Biology within the Department of Pediatrics. The Section of Developmental Biology is committed to research that improves child health with five main objectives:

  • Understand the genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms that guide normal development
  • Determine how normal developmental processes are altered to result in developmental disease and disability
  • Identify new diagnostic strategies and molecular and cellular therapies targeted at treatment of childhood disease
  • Train the next generation of leaders in developmental and stem cell biology and pediatric disease research
  • Serve as a hub for basic and translational child health research that spans the Anschutz Medical Campus research community

To accomplish these objectives the faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and research staff who comprise the Section of Developmental Biology perform research using stem cell, organoid and animal experimental models, including Drosophila, zebrafish and mice. Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems such as the brain, heart, intestine, face and vascular, olfactory and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations and the impact of maternal health on fetal development.
