Job Description


UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry (UTSD) , a part of UTHealth Houston , invites nominations and applications for the full-time position of Associate Dean for Technology Services and Informatics (TSI) at the Associate- or Full-Professor level on the tenure or non-tenure track. The position is available immediately. UTSD seeks candidates whose administrative and leadership experience, teaching, research, and service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence in dental education.

UTSD’s mission is “to improve human health by providing high-quality education, patient care, service, and research in oral health for Texas, the nation, and the world.” The Associate Dean is an integral part of UTSD’s administrative team and will provide innovative leadership and advocacy in key areas of predoctoral and postdoctoral education, patient care, and research. The Associate Dean will promote a humanistic environment that welcomes, supports, and respects all students, residents, faculty, and staff.

UTSD is committed to supporting innovation and leadership in the use of information technology in dental education. For the past several decades, UTSD has demonstrated a strong commitment to technology and consistently ranks at or near the top among dental schools/programs in developing/adopting new technologies for education, patient care, research, and expenditures (ADA Survey of Dental Education Finances Report). Home to the BigMouth Dental Data Repository and the Texas Center for Quality Healthcare Quality and Safety , TSI’s mission is to lead these and other innovative efforts and to provide the highest level of expertise, guidance, and support in technology services and informatics to UTSD students, residents, staff and faculty. 

The Associate Dean for TSI is the chief information officer for UTSD and reports directly to the Dean.  Working closely with department chairs, associate deans, faculty, staff, and the UTHealth Houston Office for Information Technology , the Associate Dean advances the school’s vision for innovation and leadership in the use of information technology in dental education. Specifically, the position is responsible for oversight, promoting, and advancing the following areas of information sciences at the school:   

  • Clinical Information Technology - electronic health record, digital imaging, teledentistry, digital dentistry.
  • Educational Technology – computer-based testing, lecture capture system, audience response systems, learning management system, video conferencing, instructional video development, courseware creation, e-portfolio, surveys, annual faculty review, curriculum mapping, virtual/augmented reality, educational technology integration.
  • Informatics - data mining, collection and analysis; interactive dashboards; research and grant application support; publications support.
  • Library – SOD Library Primo (Go.uth.edu/sodprimo ), library information, databases and resources, journals search, course textbooks.
  • Media Production Services - graphic design and printing for UTSD publications, displays, posters, wall plaques, custom certificates; still photography; building signage.
  • Web Services - UTSD public and other websites; UTSD intranet.

Other administrative responsibilities include TSI strategic planning and budgeting; TSI staffing and supervision; creating strategic alliances across UTSD, UTHealth Houston, and the Texas Medical Center ; and serving on UTSD and UTHealth Houston councils, task forces, and committees. The Associate Dean will be expected to maintain a funded research portfolio in his/her/their area of expertise. If appropriate, he/she/they will have the opportunity for faculty practice pending eligibility for full or faculty licensure in Texas.

 


Qualifications:

 

  • DDS/DMD and/or PhD or MS equivalent in technology/informatics or related field.
  • A demonstrated working knowledge of the described TSI areas of responsibility.
  • Evidence of consistent external research funding and productivity in at least one of the areas of TSI responsibility.
  • Credentials meriting appointment to the rank of associate professor or full professor on the tenure or non-tenure track.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Experience working effectively across diverse areas of focus and responsibility.
  • Minimum of 5 years administrative supervisory experience.

Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
