Description
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track, open-rank faculty position in the areas of microbiology and immunology. Applicants with expertise in viral, bacterial, or fungal pathogenesis, or immunology as it relates to infection, are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants are expected to establish an extramurally funded research program and actively participate in the teaching and service missions within the Department and University. The individual appointed to this position will serve as course director for the pre-clinical microbiology and immunology course required of first-year medical and dental students. The course director is responsible for ensuring that the instruction meets the goals of the educational programs and for all course administrative duties. In addition to course instruction, major duties include creation of the course syllabus, recruitment of teaching faculty, scheduling of course sessions and teaching space, placement of all course materials on the online curriculum management system, evaluation of student performance, recording and reporting of grades, and annual evaluation of the course. The course director will participate in committees of the RSOM and School of Dental Medicine related to curricular review and accreditation processes for both Schools.

The Department is home to two graduate programs and two NIH-funded training grants. Stony Brook University maintains state-of-the-art core facilities that support research areas, including the recently completed Laboratory for Comparative Medicine that provides facilities for biosafety level 3 research. The dynamic intellectual environment includes the Stony Brook University tertiary care Hospital and Cancer Center, the nearby Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a VA Hospital and Research Center, and the Brookhaven National Laboratory research facilities.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD or MD degree (or equivalent degree), two years or more of postdoctoral research experience, and previous teaching experience in medical and/or graduate education (separate from teaching assistantships).

Preferred Qualifications:

Two or more years of experience in medical and/or graduate course teaching and administration is preferred. Preferred areas of teaching and research expertise are microbial pathogenesis, the immunology of infection, and mucosal immunity. Preferred candidates will have a track record of research, publications, and the ability to procure extramural funding.
