Job Description
Great Basin College is seeking applications for a Program Assistant for the Prison Education Program with excellent interpersonal skills. The Program Assistant is responsible for providing student services, program and faculty support for GBC’s program at Lovelock Correctional Center and will be based at the Winnemucca Center.
 
Successful candidate must pass the extensive background investigation required by Nevada Department of Corrections, including a two-step TB test, and complete all required NDOC training. Please do not apply if you are unwilling or think you are unable to meet NDOC’s requirements for educators. Position requires regular travel to (via GBC vehicle) and work inside the correctional facility, located one hour southwest of Winnemucca. Lovelock Correctional Center is a medium security facility and this position will be working directly with individuals serving time for a variety of offenses and sentences.
 
Duties:
  • Point of contact for incarcerated individuals at Lovelock Correctional Center who are current, former, or prospective students and their families/authorized third party representatives.
  • Assists students with:
    • Admission to College and Program
    • Financial Aid Paperwork and Scholarship Applications
    • Course Registration
    • Student Information Change and Transcript Requests
    • Obtaining Records from Other Institutions (high school and post-secondary)
    • Assists Director with Advising, Arranging Disability Services, and Transitional Planning
  • Assists faculty:
    • Coordinates the exchange of materials
    • Orders textbooks
    • Copies and disseminates materials/assignments
    • May assist faculty with preparation of materials and grading for classes
    • Works with the Education Department at NDOC to ensure all faculty paperwork is complete and approved, and faculty receive all required training.
    • Maintains the approved faculty list for GBC/LCC
  • Coordinates the supply/materials list in conjunction with faculty, Assistant Warden of Programs, Center Director, and GBC Bookstore.
  • Responsible for delivering supplies and ensuring each student receives the correct materials each semester.
  • Coordinates retrieval and storage of student materials
  • Counsel students on issues and refers students to Center Director as appropriate
  • Coordinate with other prison education professionals to assist students transferring to other facilities and/or colleges
  • Coordinates with Student Financial Aid and Controller’s offices regarding student accounts
  • Collaborates with Coal Canyon High School staff for resource sharing, event planning, and communication.
 
Requirements:
Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education. Three years’ related experience Ability to pass comprehensive background screening required to access prison complex. Preference may be given to individuals with previous experience working in a correctional institution.

  • Ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, and takes appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public
 
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed under limited supervision in an office or correctional institution setting with appropriate climate controls. Work is performed in a restricted access environment and requires incumbent to maintain certifications and approval for access to the prison complex.
 
Salary:
$20.00 per hour
This is a part-time non-benefits eligible position. This position can work up to 79.5 hours per month.
