JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Earth and Mineral Sciences Energy Institute at Penn State invites applications for an immediate position of Post-Doctoral Scholar to conduct research on projects in collaboration with Dr. Randy Vander Wal.

Broadly, the research involves carbon materials, surface chemistry, microscopic and spectroscopic characterization. Applications include carbon composites, graphitic materials, energy storage media, decarbonization, and clean hydrogen. Current projects include the characterization and processing of graphene mixtures in composites, bio-based graphite formation, carbon black synthesis, thermo-catalytic decarbonization of natural gas, and flame synthesis. Carbon forms range from graphene to carbon blacks, also including graphitizing and non-graphitizing carbons precursors. Extensive analytical characterization using the instruments at the Penn State Materials Characterization Laboratory (MCL) and laboratory-based preparation is common to these material studies. Characterization techniques include TEM, XRD, NMR, TGA, Raman, and XPS for structure and bonding information. Experience with related analytical instrumentation including micro-reactors with coupled GC or MS detection is also desirable. Related studies include thermal versus microwave pyrolysis processing of hydrocarbons. Opportunity for involvement in varied projects is to be anticipated.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field by appointment start date. Strong background and training in chemistry and materials characterization techniques are required. Experience with pulsed lasers, optics, spectroscopy, and associated spectral acquisition systems is desirable, though not essential. Candidates should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to work independently and have requisite computer skills.

Interested candidates should submit the following with their online application: an application letter highlighting qualifications for the position; a curriculum vitae including educational background, employment history, and a list of peer-reviewed publications; a research statement of your interests in the context of desired qualifications; contact information for three references.

This is a post-doctoral scholar position, funded for one year from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of renewal pending available funding and satisfactory performance.

The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.
