JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Sustainable Buildings and Societies (SBS) Laboratory of the Department of Architectural Engineering (AE) in the College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar role. The SBS Lab is focused on developing cutting edge modeling and simulation technology and applying them for the design, operation, and optimization of sustainable, smart, and resilient buildings, communities, and cities.

We seek candidates for the design, modeling, and construction of a grid-interactive community test facility with buildings, PVs, smart appliances, electric vehicles, batteries, and other smart devices. The physical and virtual testbeds based on this facility will be used to perform research in indoor environmental quality, demand responses, energy efficiency, and advanced control. The Postdoctoral Scholar is also expected to 1) supervise two Ph.D. students who will also work on the facility; 2) develop and conduct collaborative research with Penn State faculty, industry partners, and Department of Energy national laboratories; 3) develop new research papers and grant proposals using this facility.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Controls, Computer Science, Architectural Engineering, or a related thermal-fluid science field

  • Demonstrated experience in building energy systems through journal publications

  • Outstanding knowledge in building energy efficiency, district energy system, or distributed energy recourse

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills

  • Experience mentoring students undertaking research projects

  • Prior experience conducting experiments on building energy and control systems is required

  • Prior experience designing or building experiment facilities is highly desired

  • Demonstrated experience with system modeling and model development is highly desired
