JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science  at Penn State (University Park, PA), in collaboration with the Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment at Princeton University (Princeton, NJ), announces a postdoctoral position in regional air quality modeling. The successful candidate will play a central role in two projects: 1) the DOE-funded Baltimore urban integrated field laboratory, the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC), 2) a NASA-funded project to improve state air quality implementation plans.

The postdoc will be co-advised by Dr. Kenneth Davis at Penn State (https://iee.psu.edu/people/kenneth-davis ) and Dr. Wei Peng at Princeton (www.weipengenergy.com ) and is expected to work closely with collaborators from multiple institutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and perform nested WRF-Chem or WRF-CMAQ simulations at city (Baltimore) and regional scales (including PA and CA).

  • Improve air quality modeling based on observation-based tests of land surface and boundary layer models being conducted by colleagues.

  • Evaluate and document the modeling system in collaboration with the research teams.

  • Develop future emission scenarios that reflect climate and energy policies to assess the air quality and health impacts.

  • Collaborate with research partners ranging from students to senior scientists and from multiple institutions.

  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals as both lead and supporting author.

  

Requirements:

  • Must have obtained a PhD or provide proof of having ABD status for a PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related discipline by the time of hire. 

  • Substantial experience in air quality modeling, such as WRF-CMAQ and/or WRF-Chem.

  • Strong communications and writing skills, ability to multi-task, and ability to work with a diverse array of collaborators. 

  • Experience with group management of research computing codes and data management is preferred.

This term position is funded for one year from the date of hire with the excellent possibility of renewal pending available funding and satisfactory performance.

The position will be available as early as September 1, 2023 and will remain open until filled. Salaries will be commensurate with education and experience.
