THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE & DANCE at UC San Diego (http://theatre.ucsd.edu) invites interdisciplinary practitioners of design for performance with focus on Designing Just Futures (https://www.design-just-futures.ucsd.edu/) to apply for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the Ladder Rank Series. The academic appointment for this position will be for an Assistant Professor in Theatre & Dance, effective 7/1/24 (service period begins 9/23/24 ).
We invite exceptional artists/designers who emphasize interdisciplinary methodologies and whose research, practice, and service center on the perspectives, epistemologies, and concerns of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Aboriginal communities of North America and/or Pasifika and other Indigenous communities. Applicants should be an interdisciplinary artist/designer - artists for whom design (in its many forms) is a primary mode of creative intervention and a practice for community engagement and world-making; one who has been recognized as cutting-edge in the profession, a risk-taker, a bold and empathic collaborator, and a creative responder who poses potent questions through their work. Applicants should have a clearly established unique artistic vision, identity, voice, and praxis in relation to Indigenous experiences.
This position is one of 8 new ladder-rank faculty positions in the Designing Just Futures Cluster Hire Initiative at UC San Diego (https://www.design-just-futures.ucsd.edu/). As faculty hired into this position will work with the Design Lab (https://designlab.ucsd.edu/) and Indigenous Futures Institute at UCSD (https://ifi.ucsd.edu/), we specifically welcome interdisciplinary artists/designers with approaches that center and innovate in the fields of human-centered design.
This search is part of a UC San Diego-wide cluster hire (https://www.design-just-futures.ucsd.edu/) on Designing Just Futures that aims to recruit scholars who can contribute to the advancement of design, social justice, and Indigenous, Black, and migrant futures and seeks engagement with scholars across disciplines to address issues of territory, access and equity, and social and political debates pertinent to Indigenous, Black, border and migrant communities, while also working within their home departments and professional communities.
Faculty hired under this initiative will join the UC San Diego campus, the Theatre & Dance Department, the UC San Diego Design Lab ( https://designlab.ucsd.edu/) and have the opportunity to join the Indigenous Futures Institute (https://ifi.ucsd.edu/) to forge a new paradigm of engagement and collaboration that draws on the geographic, academic, institutional, and cultural strengths of our tri-national region across Southern California, Baja California, and the Kumeyaay region.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate evidence of engagement with areas of research such as:
-Futures, futurities, and/or futurism in Indigenous communities
-Climate action and preserving planetary health from an Indigenous perspective
-Issues of race and racism, access and equity, social and political debates
-Creating social prototypes, events, performances, technology that engage community
-Performance and political action to communicate stories about 21st century Indigeneity transcending colonial structures.
Applicants should also demonstrate evidence within their professional experience, community engagement, and personal background of their understanding of and ability to better serve students from Indigenous communities in higher education through community approaches to art/design making, and land-based performance.
As part of their teaching portfolio, faculty hired under Designing Just Futures will be expected to design and teach courses that align with the department of Theatre & Dance, the Design Lab, and the Indigenous Futures Institute programs.
Faculty are expected to have an inclusive approach to mentoring that incorporates working with women and underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching will include large undergraduate courses and smaller graduate courses. Additionally, the appointee will be expected to participate as a member of the campus community on committees at both departmental and university levels.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Applicants should possess an MFA or 3-5 years of professional experience and/or relevant training.
- Applicants should demonstrate 1 to 3 years of evidence of teaching effectiveness and mentorship in higher education. Examples include but are not limited to: positive teaching/mentoring evaluations, student support letters, peer/professional reviews, applicable awards/honors/nominations. Teaching experience can include, but is not limited to: academic institutions, artist residencies, seminars, creative workshops, and participatory performances.
