The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Director for Academic Appointments and Compensation to join their team.

The Director for Academic Appointments and Compensation (Director) has primary responsibility for the development and management of School of Medicine policies and programs related to faculty appointments and compensation for the University of Washington School of Medicine (SoM). Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic and Medical Staff Affairs, the Director leads the office of Academic Appointments and Compensation (AAC) and directs all aspects of academic HR for over 10,000 academic personnel including faculty, postdoctoral scholars and Fellow Non-ACGME trainees across 32 departments. The Director works with department chairs, vice chairs, administrators, Dean’s Office leadership, Provost’s office, practice plans and affiliated institution representatives providing guidance, background information, and management advice.

The Director has decision-making authority and must exercise prudent judgment when structuring and setting faculty compensation while ensuring strict compliance to University, federal government, State, physician practice group--UW Physicians (UWP), and Children’s University Medical Group (CUMG), and closely affiliated institutions—Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), Veteran’s Administration Hospital (VA), Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center (CHRMC), Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), policies and procedures with regard to faculty compensation. The Director is the primary working-level interface with the SOM departments, University units (Academic Personnel, Schools and Colleges), UWP, CUMP, and closely affiliated institutions regarding faculty compensation issues.

This position provides assistance to the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academic and Medical Staff Affairs, CFO, and the Director of Personnel Policy as necessary on complex and confidential compensation issues, requiring in-depth knowledge of University, School, practice plans, and closely affiliated institution policies and procedures. The Director will delegate to and manage the work of the unit through subordinate professional or classified staff to facilitate the execution of these responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic Appointments:
The Director is responsible for oversight of the office of Academic Appointments and Compensation, major areas of responsibility of which include:
• Management of Academic appointments including faculty, postdoctoral scholars and Fellow Non-ACGME trainees, reappointments and promotions.
• Management of SoM’s faculty database and other electronic applications that serve the school, departments, practice plans and affiliated institutions.
• Management of J-1 and H-1B visas for faculty, postdoctoral scholars and Fellow Non- ACGME trainees.
• Provide advice and direction regarding SoM and UW academic policies and procedures.

Faculty Compensation:
The Director will direct and instruct departmental chairs, vice chairs, administrators and related departmental staff throughout UW Medicine and at closely affiliated institutions concerning academic compensation issues. The position will review and approve proposal documents prepared by department chairs and administrators ensuring strict compliance with multiple regulatory bodies. Duties include:
• Serve as the Dean’s Office advisor to department chairs, vice chairs, administrators, UWP, CUMG, medical centers and closely affiliated institutions to solve issues affecting faculty compensation, consulting with the Vice Dean, Associate Deans, Director of Personnel Policy, and Vice Provost.
• Facilitate resolution of recruitment and retention compensation issues.
• Oversee validation of values and/or commitments of state lines.
• Review, reconcile and provide Dean’s Office approval of requests for unit salary adjustments, administrative supplements, and temporary salary supplements.
• Direct the State-legislated faculty salary increase process for the SoM.
• Work with UWP and CUMG financial officers to resolve basic individual cap issues affected by practice plan incentive distribution projections. Approve and document specific resolutions.
• Approve a/b salary structures and agreements.
• Provide compensation analysis for the Associate Dean and Vice Dean.
• Meet with Department chairs and administrators on a cyclical basis to review departmental profile related to compensation and gender equity. Serve as an advisor to chairs and in the planning, implementation and resolution of any issues identified.
• Review, approve and document departmental requests for physician faculty compensation cap exceptions and use of alternate specialty categories in consultation with the Dean’s Office. Advise chairs and administrators on relevant policy and appropriateness of requests, ensuring strict compliance with School and practice plan regulations.
• Provide, review and coordination of Dean’s Office compensation arrangements, adjustments, implementation and reporting.
• Provide analysis as requested.

Third Party Reporting:
The Director oversees the interactions with outside entities related to SOM faculty compensation. Such entities include American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), HHMI, VA, FHCC, and non-SoM components of UW Medicine. The Director is responsible for:
• Directs the coordination, analysis and reporting of comprehensive compensation data to entities external to the SM ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the data presented.
• Assistance to SoM management in completing reporting requirements to regulatory agencies or auditors, or surveys.
• Work with compliance and regulatory office on sensitive issues.

Other Duties:
• Research and write transmittal letters, confidential correspondence, reports and other materials for the Dean’s signature.
• Manage special projects requested by the Dean’s Office.
• Champion Lean principles throughout the office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Human Resources, or related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of job-related experience managing faculty appointment processes and issues, dealing with complex policies and procedures.

Additional requirements:

• Familiarity with compensation structures of, and factors affecting, medical school faculty and medical staff appointments.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Human Resources, or related field.
