Job Description Summary:
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career.
A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well as promote the publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write, and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.
Seeking a highly self-motivated, hardworking postdoctoral candidate with clinical research experience to work at the University of Kansas Medical Center, focused on outcomes research in kidney diseases and the role of kidney function and vascular disease on cognitive impairment and dementia. Primary research efforts are aimed at understanding how kidney disease affects brain health, and prevention of cognitive impairment and dementia by addressing modifiable risk factors.
Candidates with a strong interest in clinical or epidemiological research and in areas of neurocognitive function and cardio-renal systems will be preferred. Competence in areas of critical thinking and written/communication skills in English, with prior experience in scientific writing and the ability to work as part of a team is required.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences such as physiology, neuroscience, or a related field or MD/ MBBS or equivalent with at least 1 year of clinical research experience.

Work Experience:

  • A record of scientific productivity as evidenced by application materials

  • Experience in clinical research, with an understanding of basic clinical research components, including study design, approach to analysis, simple statistical terms, simple statistical analysis, and reporting of data.

  • Previous work experience analyzing, interpreting, discussing and reporting data to key stakeholders within the scientific community

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • A record of the candidate’s ability and scientific productivity.

  • Experience in clinical research.

Skills:

  • Understanding of basic clinical research components, including study design, approach to analysis, simple statistical terms, and reporting of data is essential.

  • Skills such as scientific writing (including use of Microsoft Word, endnote etc.), data management, ethical conduct in clinical research, and being a team player are preferred.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills to present, write grants and draft manuscripts.

Job Duties Outlined

Research Overview:

  • Work with PI/faculty mentor, to design and perform study-related activities including reviewing literature to understand the research topic, work with the study team to develop study protocols, and participate in study design, protocol writing, collecting data, analysis plan, and discussion of findings.

  • Work closely with the supervisor and study coordinator to ensure proper execution of the study protocol.

  • Participate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.

Postdoc Expectations:

  • The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

  • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.

  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings.

  • Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.

  • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building for projects

Compliance:

  • Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

  • Perform other duties assigned by PI and faculty mentor.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
