Position: Interim Director of Marketing and External Relations (Time limited position)

Timeline: October 1, 2023 through February 2024, up to 4 ½ months

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

Supervision Requirements: Marketing and Storyteller Manager, Development Manager

Work Unit: Marketing and External Relations

Location: San Rafael, CA with regular work throughout the San Francisco Bay Area

Hours: Full-time, salaried, exempt status

Salary Description: $6,500-$7,500 range per month

 


BACKGROUND

The Agricultural Institute of Marin is an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in San Rafael, California. AIM's mission is to educate, inspire, and connect communities, responsible farmers and producers as part of a healthy, Earth-friendly, equitable local and regional food system. We envision a responsible food and farming system that is environmentally beneficial, economically viable, and socially just. AIM serves 400+ farmers, food purveyors, and artisans from 40 California counties who participate in AIM's Certified Farmers Markets in the cities of Hayward, Newark, Oakland, Point Reyes, San Rafael, and San Francisco. AIM also provides hands-on and virtual education programs to thousands of children and adults, operates a farm audit program, runs a mobile market for older adults and underserved communities, curates a multi-farm produce box program, and operates CalFresh/EBT and Market Match services to create a healthier, equitable food system across the San Francisco Bay Area.

JOB SUMMARY

This is an exciting short-term opportunity for an Interim Director of Marketing and External Relations who is looking to build their chops at the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM). The Director will manage AIM's Marketing and Event planning functions, including management of staff and oversight of marketing strategies and fundraising initiatives. With the CEO, the Director acts as spokesperson for AIM within the community, to government, prospective funders and others. The Director markets and promotes the organization's goals and objectives in order to develop grass-roots support within the community. The Director oversees all media, public relations activities, campaigns and major events. The Director develops organizational marketing policies and communicates them to the entire organization and maintains editorial control of all marketing and public relations collateral released on behalf of AIM. This is a hybrid/remote position with at least three days per week required in the office, in person.


Essential Duties and Qualifications:

  • Collaborate with CEO and Leadership Team to drive organizational marketing initiatives for the associated timeline
  • Develop and implement comprehensive annual marketing and communication plan, encompassing public relations, media relations, social media, digital communications, key messaging, and storytelling
  • Prepare and develop annual Community Impact Report
  • Assume total responsibility and ownership in leading the planning and execution of all assigned events
  • Coordinate content, graphic development and production of all collateral
  • Develop, write and manage website content and design
  • Direct, coordinate, and grow mass communications efforts
  • Lead the creation of fundraising materials and messaging to assist the Development Team
  • Partner with CEO and Board on marketing and fundraising strategies for the organization and Capital Campaign
  • Manage conception, development, and implementation of marketing plans and strategy, and promotional programs
  • Build strong working relationships with key cross-functional partners
  • Manage and supervise direct reports for the on-time delivery and execution of marketing initiatives
  • Provide leadership, support, and direct supervision for Marketing and Storyteller Manager and Development Manager
  • Oversee contractors for brand and web development and grant funded marketing initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts, Design, Marketing/Communications or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years' marketing experience
  • Successful track record of completing and delivering projects within the scope, cost, and schedule required
  • Knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, Sketch, InDesign, and other graphic design software
  • Self-motivated and confident, highly organized, and diligent. A self-starter and effective collaborator with a no task too small approach
  • Experience with social media engagement, content management, media coverage and event planning
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography, print, and the web
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, a strong sense of quality and a creative mind set
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience in digital and print marketing
  • Thinks creatively and strategically
  • Passion for local foods and agriculture a plus
