Postdoctoral Appointee - Computational Materials Science

Argonne National Laboratory

Job Description

A postdoctoral position on the atomistic simulation of the coupled electronic and thermal transport properties of complex nanomaterials at Argonne National Laboratory (near Chicago, USA) is available.

The focus is on developing an integrated computational framework based on first principles simulations, classical molecular dynamics based on machine-learned force fields to model electrothermal effects such as Joule heating in emerging three-dimensional-integrated electronics architectures.

The successful candidate will have the rare opportunity to use and deploy state-of-the-art tools for the largest computers for scientific computing.

The work is part of a larger collaboration between the Physical Science and Engineering directorate (Pierre Darancet, Subramanian Sankaranarayan, and Maria Chan), and the Computing, Environment, and Life Sciences directorate (Alvaro Vazquez Mayagoitia, Huihuo Zheng) at Argonne. Questions about the position should be directed to Pierre Darancet (pdarancet@anl.gov ).

Please note that only applications through the Argonne website will be considered.

Interviews will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Position Requirements

Required skills and qualifications:

  • A recent Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field is required (received within the last 3 years or the upcoming year)

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Demonstrated expertise in the following topics:

  • Atomistic (density functional theory, ab initio or classical molecular dynamics) modeling of solid-state materials

  • Scientific programming (e.g. C++, fortran, python,….)

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Understanding of electronic structure/transport

  • Experience with electron-phonon coupling

  • Experience with modeling thermal transport

  • Experience developing machine learning force fields

  • Effective collaborative skills

Interested candidates should apply directly at the Argonne website with an updated CV and answers to the following questions on their Cover Letter:

  • What materials modeling technique(s) do you have expertise in?

  • What computational tools have you utilized in your research?

  • What is your experience with software development?

  • What is your experience using high performance computing?

  • What is your experience with collaborative projects?
