The Department of Natural Resources Science (NRS) in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for an academic year, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in applied quantitative ecology. Appointment is sought for the 2024 Spring or Fall semester. URI is the State of Rhode Island’s flagship land/sea grant research university located in Kingston, Rhode Island— a beautiful seaside community that is well connected by car and rail, lying 40 minutes from Providence, an hour from Boston and 3 hours from New York City. Southern Rhode Island is rural, with numerous wildlife refuges, state management areas and local land trusts where research can be conducted yet is reasonably close to possible urban sites.
NRS has 18 full-time faculty members, over 300 undergraduates majoring in either Wildlife and Conservation Biology or Environmental Science and Management, and numerous graduate students majoring in either M.E.S.M (a non-thesis professional M.S. program in environmental science and management), or thesis-based research in the Biological and Environmental Sciences for M.S. and Ph.D. students.
We invite individuals with a strong commitment to teaching, research, experiential learning, and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will generate an internationally recognized program of research and scholarship investigating the applied quantitative ecology of terrestrial vertebrates. The candidate is expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and experiential learning that incorporates contemporary statistical approaches and quantitative technological advances to investigate the applied ecology and conservation biology of terrestrial vertebrates. Priority will be given to candidates who show a commitment to broadening participation of members of underrepresented groups in science through research, pedagogical practices, and public engagement, and who would contribute to University of Rhode Island’s goals of increasing diversity, equity and inclusion.
BASIC FUNCTION:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish a competitive, extramural-funded research program
Publish original research in peer-reviewed academic journals with an international audience and other significant research outlets.

Provide advising, training, and research mentorship to undergraduates majoring in Wildlife and Conservation Biology and graduate students in the Biological and Environmental Sciences, which is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental postgraduate degree program.
Support the University’s commitment to fostering an inclusive culture in our learning and working environments.
Engage in service activities and governance within the Department, College, University, and the applied quantitative ecology profession.
Provide public communication, outreach, and/or engagement relevant to the focus of the teaching and research program.
