Position description
The School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Division of Infectious Diseases & Vaccinology (IDV), which is renowned for its tradition of multidisciplinary infectious disease research.
Preventing and combating the next pandemic will require a better understanding of how pandemic-causing pathogens emerge, what factors drive their spread in space and time, how they acquire new traits as they evolve in human populations, and how to best design effective interventions. We seek a faculty member with expertise in molecular epidemiology and pathogen genomics, whose research is explicitly engaged in questions relevant to identifying, tracking, characterizing, and understanding pathogens, including endemic, emerging, and re-emerging agents (viruses, bacteria, and eukaryotic pathogens). Candidates are invited to apply at the level of Assistant Professor. The ideal candidate will utilize the tools of molecular epidemiology in the context of field- and/or laboratory-based, globally engaged research. While molecular epidemiology or phylogenomics are the focus of this search, candidates with parallel expertise in areas including: pathogen, host and vector biology; phylogeography; computational biology; environmental influences on the emergence and transmission of epidemic-prone diseases; the epidemiological and global impact of pathogens on human populations; or other related aspects of infectious disease epidemiology, evolution, and pathogen-host biology will be preferred. The selected candidate will contribute critically to our educational mission, including developing a modern course in molecular epidemiology that teaches the methods required for pathogen phylogenomics. Successful applicants are expected to develop a nationally recognized program addressing public health problems with cutting-edge genomics approaches and to collaborate across disciplines to develop research initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, the potential for securing extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral scholars.
We are particularly interested in scholars with a commitment and track record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the realms of research, teaching, and/or service. Successful applicants are expected to develop a nationally recognized laboratory-based program addressing public health problems and to collaborate across disciplines to develop research initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, the potential for securing extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs.
Teaching and service expectations will be assigned commensurate with the candidate's academic rank. The IDV Division offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration with distinguished faculty and researchers at UC Berkeley and within the greater Bay Area in the fields of virology, bacteriology, parasitology, immunology, clinical infectious diseases, computational biology, data science, and modelling, among others. The successful applicant will be assigned a senior faculty mentor through our Junior Faculty Mentoring Program and provided with career development, guidance, and training to ensure a pathway to success.
The UC Berkeley School of Public Health recognizes the intrinsic relationship between diversity and excellence in all our endeavors. The School embraces open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development as our obligation and goal. We seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through their research, teaching, and service.
The school is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
