Postdoctoral Fellow (ENIGMA Project)

Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL ) Biological Systems and Engineering (BSE ) Division has a new and exciting Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity to work on a highly collaborative team. The Mukhopadhyay Lab focuses on studying microbial functional genomics and microbial signaling for important microbes and microbial communities from unusual environments. Signaling is a fascinating aspect of microbial stress response and survival and at Berkeley Lab we use cutting edge technology such as DAP-seq to examine this. Checkout the Mukhopadhyay Group at https://m-group.lbl.gov/ and the ENIGMA project at https://enigma.lbl.gov/ .

In this role you will focus on key aspects of examining newly discovered and isolated bacterial systems from various pristine and contaminated energy related environments. You will work on a project focusing on key aspects of examining signaling and horizontal gene transfer in environmentally critical bacterial l systems from various pristine and contaminated sites. You will use both computational and wet lab approaches to examine molecular level responses to various external stresses such as high nitrate and metal contaminations and use cutting edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods to discover new regulatory signaling networks in model and non-model microbes.

This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2023.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop workflows to examine model and non-model isolates from the field sites.
  • Examine signaling and mobile genetic elements from bacterial isolates and communities using wet lab and computational approaches.
  • Analyze functional genomics data, especially those related to fitness (RB-TnSeq) and regulation (DAP-seq) generated in house, from literature and obtained from sequencing centers such as the Joint Genome Institute to develop hypotheses for validation.
  • Use genome scale models in combination with functional genomics data to examine routes to signaling, transport and metabolic routes. In some cases, devise and implement genetic engineering to examine hypotheses.
  • Collaborate effectively with multiple PIs and researchers of the large LBNL project to accomplish the goals of the project.
  • Publish in high impact peer review journals.
  • Contribute to scientific research papers and reports.
  • Present scientific results at an international meeting.
  • Assist with preparations for funding applications, grants, and proposals.

What is Required:

  • A recent Ph.D. (within the last 1-3 years) in Molecular Biology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with computational analysis of genomics data including demonstrated expertise in RNAseq and other sequencing data.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize technical/scientific information, publish in top journals, and present at conferences.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or Systems Biology research and development.
  • Experience working with bacterial signaling systems.

Notes:

  • For first consideration, please apply with a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume by September 25, 2023.
  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Postdoctoral Fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374-$6,444 and is expected to start at $5,374 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position will be performed onsite at the Emeryville Station East Operations Center (ESE) — Bldg. 978, located at 5885 Hollis St., 4th floor, Emeryville, CA 94608.
