Position Summary

The Geng and Odeny Labs are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on Implementation Science (IS) and Global Health, with a sub-focus on IS to Address Cancer in People Living with HIV. 

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with our collaborators in Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, South Africa). In addition to high-quality research facilities, career and professional development training for postdoctoral researchers is provided through the Career Center, Teaching Center, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and campus groups.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

During the postdoctoral fellowship, we plan three workstreams that will add up to be greater than the sum of its parts for launching a research career in implementation science and global health.

• Workstream 1 will be to develop a career development award application, which could be an NIH grant but could also seek private and other philanthropic sources. 
• Workstream 2 will involve a âœmanuscript development consultations,❠catering specifically to emerging investigators in Kenya involved in the projects that Thomas Odeny and Elvin Geng have worked together to lead, honing their skills in development of concepts, manuscript assembly, and offering tailored support to build scientific capabilities. This will create valuable co-authorship experiences but also advance expertise in capacity building and training.
• In Workstream 3 we will ask you to participate in ongoing advanced implementation science activities at WUSTL to continue to deepen your knowledge of the field.

These three workstreams collectively form a robust framework, nurturing growth, knowledge, and practical expertise in these critical areas and position you well for independent faculty position.

Workstream 1: Developing a Career Development Award Application Opportunity Identification:

• Identify suitable opportunities for career development awards, including the K43 mechanism and but also other relevant options.

Project Identification and Aims Development:

• Analyze your existing interests and determine fit with existing research programs including ADAPT program and ongoing Global oncology research.

Publication of Preliminary Data:

• Identify existing preliminary data to substantiate the feasibility and potential impact of your proposed CDA; showcase your research capabilities.

Develop a Career Development Plan:

• Develop a comprehensive career development plan that outlines your short-term and long-term objectives, along with the strategies you will employ to achieve them designed to âœmake the case❠in a NIH CDA.

Workstream 2: Consultations to Support Manuscript Development Assessment of Opportunities and Needs:

• Familiarize and assess the current status of emerging ideas and identify gaps.

Develop a Systematic Approach:

• Develop a systematic approach to assist investigators within the Kenya program in manuscript development.
• Recognize the diverse paths of individuals building scientific portfolios, whether through traditional degree programs or other avenues.
• Offer tailored support to enhance scientific capabilities, even for those not currently pursuing formal degrees.

Consultation/Global Health Implementation Science Clinic:

• Provide one-to-one support; participation in manuscript authorship; identify new prospects to lead analyses.
• Present âœcases❠to Drs. Geng and Odeny (and others) on a schedule to be developed.

Write Up Systematic Process for Manuscript Development:

• Report on this process in a manuscript.

This structured approach across both workstreams aims to maximize the potential for successful career development award applications and enhanced manuscript development for emerging investigators in LMIC settings.

Workstream 3: Deepen Knowledge of Implementation Science Introduction and Familiarization with DIRC:

• Familiarize with initiation through the Dissemination and Implementation Research website.
• Understand available D&I resources.
• Understand how to guide support through the Just In Time Core Usage Funding Program.

Offer D&I Consultation (two to four a year):

• Expert study design consultation.
• Access to measurement tools and interventions.
• Support for literature reviews.
• Guidance in grant writing.
• Assistance in manuscript preparation.

Present at quarterly DIRC meetings.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Global Health (Implementation Science).

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
