Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Observational Astronomy

Job Description

The Astronomy Department at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. We seek new colleagues to join our Department and the university community. We encourage candidates who demonstrate outstanding research and commitment to teaching and community development within observational astronomy, especially extragalactic, to apply. Successful candidates will have a research program that enhances Cornell’s high-visibility program by either building on current strengths or introducing new directions that complement areas of ongoing work.  Current Department members use a wide range of space- and ground-based astronomical facilities and are actively engaged in developing the CCAT Observatory, which includes the 6-meter aperture Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) operating on Cerro Chajnantor in Chile overlooking the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA).

We particularly encourage applicants from groups that are underrepresented in physical sciences, such as women; Black, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and Latinx scholars; as well as individuals with disabilities, and protected veterans. We expect candidates to have an established record of high-impact research and to demonstrate the potential to build an externally-funded independent research program. The successful candidate will teach and advise a diverse set of undergraduate and graduate students, and so a record of excellence in and/or commitment to teaching, mentorship and diversity are sought. A Ph.D. in astronomy or a closely related field is required, and postdoctoral experience is preferred.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae with publications, a statement of research, a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy and three letters of recommendation to: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25604 .

We ask applicants for all faculty positions to share their experiences and/or approaches (past, current, or future) to fostering learning, research, service, and/or outreach in a diverse community. Applicants may choose to submit a stand-alone statement or embed the information in other parts of their application materials.

The target start date for the appointment is July 1, 2024. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University's heritage. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities. We also recognize a lawful preference in employment practices for Native Americans living on or near Indian reservations.

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

Pay Range: $76,200 - $211,000 Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills
