Vice President for Academic Affairs

The College of St. Scholastica (CSS), a regional comprehensive institution situated in Duluth, Minnesota, seeks a visionary, inspiring, and transformational leader to serve as its next Vice President for Academic Affairs. The College has experienced growth over the past several years and requires an academic leader who brings a passion for and relentless pursuit of academic excellence that will shape CSS’s academic mission for the future.

The Position

The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) must be a seasoned scholar and administrator with experience in higher education who can build upon CSS’s recent momentum and successful growth while bringing from their past experience a passion for pursuit of academic excellence. As the College’s Chief Academic Officer, they will bring a track record of teaching and scholarship to lead CSS’s highly talented and passionate faculty in ensuring academic affairs is central to the College and serving students.

While the VPAA’s academic focus can be in any discipline within the College’s curriculum, it will be critical that this new leader have an appreciation for and experience with supporting diverse academic programs encompassed in CSS’s schools. A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the liberal arts tradition and the connectivity between programs and the interdisciplinary opportunities within and across the schools will be key to the VPAA’s role in supporting implementation of the Strategic Plan.

Reporting directly to the President and serving as a member of the Cabinet, the Vice President for Academic Affairs will oversee the following areas:

  • Academic Affairs

  • Advising

  • Assessment

  • Center for Instructional Design

  • Center for Teaching and Learning

  • General Education

  • Honors Program

  • Institutional Research

  • Library

  • Registrar

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As partner to the President, lead the academic mission, programs, and faculty strategically and in concert with fiscal objectives, while adhering fully to CSS’s mission, vision, and Benedictine values.

  • Be a beacon for academic and inclusive excellence for the faculty and students, demonstrating a transformative vision that will serve both a traditional and non-traditional, diverse student body.

  • Advocate for faculty and student success. This includes thinking creatively about and being receptive to ideas for new academic programs, lobbying for resources appropriately, and representing the academic mission and needs of faculty to the President and Cabinet through shared governance.

  • Promote and assess scholarship and teaching across academic disciplines, including recruiting, retaining, evaluating, developing, and supporting an outstanding, diverse faculty.

  • Promote reflection and assessment of inclusive practices on our campuses while supporting accountability measures that further promote diversity and inclusion on campus.

  • Build an evidence-based culture of leadership and decision-making.

Essential Qualifications

  • An earned terminal degree.

  • A record of excellence in teaching and scholarship requisite for tenure among the CSS faculty.

  • Commitment to Catholic Benedictine identity, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
