Posting Summary
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) – Department of Facility Administration is seeking a Master Dental Mechanic. Under the direction of the Director of Facility Administration, the Master Dental Mechanic carries out various technical work involved in the installation, preventive and routine maintenance of dental equipment. RSDM maintains in excess of 350 dental operatories in two undergraduate clinics, post-graduate and specialty clinics. They also maintain 115 dental simulating benches and supporting laboratories. The equipment, including electrical pneumatic and plumbing related repairs, is maintained in an ongoing manner as required by clinical operations. The equipment consists of radiology equipment, dental delivery systems, sterilization (asepsis) equipment, hand pieces and other specialized biomedical equipment. Mechanical services may be preventive in nature or may involve emergency services in the RSDM buildings, the Doctors Office Center and any of our offsite clinics. The Master Dental Mechanic is expected to be an expert on all types of dental equipment and be able to handle any phase from initiation through completion of an equipment installation or repair project. The Master Mechanic would lead all other Dental Mechanics and provide guidance in their work.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Provides work direction and technical oversight to lower level technical staff who perform maintenance and repair on numerous types of dental equipment and associated equipment.
  • Manages preventive and routine maintenance for the care and upkeep of all dental and auxiliary dental equipment in a safe manner.
  • Oversees minor repairs and renovations to building(s) as required to prepare for the installation of new or relocated dental equipment.
  • Assists in planning implementation and attends technical training sessions and seminars as required.
  • Communicates with peers and supervisors regarding work status and suggested methods for improvement. Delivers important information to Dental Technician positions as well as any vendors or contractors that are working on site.
  • Provides on the job supervision to other RSDM technicians and contracted mechanics performing repairs and maintenance on University owned equipment.
  • Ensures work areas are clean, orderly and safe with patient care in mind.
  • Coordinates research, purchasing and management of spare and replacement parts inventory.
  • Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Associates of Arts degree/technical school certification in electrical or plumbing plus a minimum of (6) six years of related experience required.
  • Experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the educational requirements.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Successful completion of a Biomedical Equipment Repair School Program.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must read and work from sketches, formal plans, specifications and schematic diagrams pertinent to the job.
  • Must be able to perform installation and preventive maintenance according to manufacturer’s specifications.

  • Specialty dental equipment from BeinAir, A-Dec, KAVO, Sterisil and Dentsply.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift 65 pounds, climb ladders, and work on the floor kneeling or crouching down.
  • Indoors in various clinical, construction or workshop environments.
