Mentor: Dr. Rachel Sinkey, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
A one-year postdoctoral position working with Dr. Rachel Sinkey in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is available. Part of Dr. Sinkey’s research portfolio, in conjunction with Dr. Wally Carlo of the Division of Neonatology, is focused on reducing health disparities in pregnancy outcomes. Dr. Sinkey is co-PI of the American Heart Association P3OPPY (Providing an optimized and empowered pregnancy for you) study that seeks to examine whether digital health or community health worker interventions reduce adverse outcomes among Non-Hispanic Black women who experience unacceptably high rates of adverse outcomes. A feasibility trial will be conducted ahead of a planned 400 person clinical trial to assess whether the interventions improve outcomes as compared to usual care.
Candidates will be expected to work with Dr. Sinkey, Dr. Carlo, and their team on projects related to the feasibility and clinical trials. Candidates will also participate in projects using data from UAB electronic medical records and other available clinical databases to address questions related to perinatal disparities. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in public health, clinical medicine, epidemiology, or related field. The candidate should also have strong communication and writing skills, as the candidate will be expected to help with grant proposals and manuscripts.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Project management
Data abstraction and cleaning (i.e., from UAB electronic health records and external clinical databases)
Data analysis and interpretation
Leading and supporting manuscript writing
Leading and supporting grant proposal development and writing
Qualifications:
- Basic Qualifications
Current or anticipated MD or PhD
Additional Qualifications:
MPH or MSPH preferred
- Experience in perinatal disparities research is highly desirable
- Experience working with clinical charts and data
Opportunities:
The successful candidate will be mentored to achieve their goals, progressing to greater independence during the fellowship. Ample opportunities for professional development, mentorship, academic and research leadership, publication, and applied knowledge translation will be provided through the interdisciplinary training environment in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Through her NIH and American Heart Association Funding, Dr. Sinkey collaborates closely with community partners, UAB and other academic faculty with expertise in mixed methods, behavioral science, epidemiology, biostatistics, and translational science. This opportunity involves being part of a team of interdisciplinary faculty, trainees and staff collaborating through the UAB Center for Women’s Heath.
