Postdoctoral Scholar in Stellar Astrophysics

Job Description

Postdoctoral Scholar in Stellar Astrophysics

KAVLI INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS
Kohn Hall, MC 4030
University of California, Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-4030

There will be a postdoctoral scholar opening in the research group of Prof. Lars Bildsten starting September 1, 2024. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year, contingent on continued funding and a reasonable level of research performance. The postdoctoral researcher would carry out research in collaboration with Bildsten's research group, which is presently focused on theoretical work ranging from supernova progenitors to 3D simulations of massive star envelopes and explosive interactions. Developing and using computational tools for 3D stellar and supernova physics is a large part of the group's activities. We also strongly interact with scientists of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO), while maintaining a host of theoretical collaborations in the stellar and explosive astrophysics domain. Theoretically oriented observational astrophysicists working in these areas are welcome to apply.

Minimum requirements: Completion of Ph.D. degree by the start date.

Additional requirements: Outstanding research in astrophysics appropriate to level of position, and the ability to identify and pursue research problems independently while working well in an interactive and dynamic setting.

Applications for postdoctoral positions should be made electronically via the Academic Jobs Online website: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25288

The application must consist of a curriculum vita, publication list, statement of research interests, and three letters of reference.

Inquiries may be addressed to Professor Lars Bildsten (bildsten at kitp.ucsb.edu). Apply by November 15, 2023 for primary consideration. Later applications will be considered only as long as openings exist.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
