Postdoctoral Scholar

Job Description

The Nuclear Science Division (NSD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar, with focus on the development of new approaches to Bayesian Inference and Uncertainty Quantification (Bayesian UQ) using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

The position is hosted by the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions Program (RNC) in the NSD. The RNC carries out experimental research in a broad range of areas in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), with strong participation in the ALICE experiment at the LHC, the STAR and sPHENIX experiments at RHIC, and the future EPIC experiment at the EIC. Members of the RNC play a leading role in the JETSCAPE Collaboration of experimentalists and theorists, which applies Bayesian Inference to study the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) and other aspects of QCD. The NSD also has a strong QCD Theory group, whose members collaborate closely with RNC.

The work in this position will be divided evenly between two projects:

  • Collaborate on a new, multi-disciplinary initiative which brings together physicists and data scientists to explore general ML/AI-based solutions to Bayesian UQ problems in diverse areas of Nuclear Physics, including the QGP, neutrinos, and applied NP. This position will focus on QGP physics, utilizing JETSCAPE as the test-bed for new developments.

  • Carry out research in support of one of the areas of interest of the RNC Program, depending upon the interests of the candidate and needs of the RNC Program.

The position is open both to experimentalists and to theory phenomenologists, with an interest in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and the quantitative interpretation of experimental data.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to research in an original manner. Create new Bayesian UQ algorithms and apply existing algorithms in novel ways to heavy-ion and other Nuclear Physics data.

  • Perform novel theoretical modeling calculations of the dynamics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma, or carry out novel analyses of experimental data.

  • Report results of these calculations to the local and broader scientific communities, in RNC group meetings, NSD meetings, seminars, and conference talks.

  • Publish papers/reports documenting these analyses in refereed journals.

  • Mentor students in their research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Nuclear/High-Energy Physics or a related discipline within the last 3 years (excluding career interruptions).

  • Experience with theoretical modeling or data analysis in high energy particles or nuclear physics.

  • Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment.

The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:

  • Cover Letter.

  •  Curriculum vitae.

  • A list of up to ten relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications.

  • A statement describing current and future research interests (3-page limit excluding figures and references).

  • A statement describing past activities and future interests in diversity, outreach and leadership (1 page maximum).

  • Arrange to have 3 letters of reference submitted (at least one reference from outside LBNL/UC Berkeley).

  •

    Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $6,257 and is expected to start at $5,954 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

    Notes:

    • This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

    • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

    • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

    • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
