Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression (LRBGE)

The Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites applications for a Staff Scientist in RNA/Computational Biology in the Laboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression (LRBGE). For an overview, please visit the LRBGE/CCR website.

Who We Are

The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is the intramural research component of the NCI. CCR’s enabling infrastructure facilitates clinical studies at the NIH Clinical Center, provides extensive opportunities for collaboration, and allows scientists and clinicians to undertake high-risk, high-impact laboratory and clinically based investigations. Investigators are supported by a wide array of intellectual, technological and research resources including, animal facilities and dedicated, high-quality technology cores in areas such as imaging/microscopy, chemistry/purification, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, genomics/DNA sequencing, transgenics and knockout mice, arrays/molecular profiling, and human genetics/bioinformatics.  For an overview of CCR, please visit CCR website.

Eligibility

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent and relevant postdoctoral experience. Experience in the analysis of high-throughput data and excellent programming skills (python, R, C/C++, Java) will be required.  Expert knowledge of core statistical methods and a demonstrated ability to self-educate as new experimental and computational resources become available is a must. Successful applicants should have a strong track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, excellent communication skills, and a proven ability to supervise junior trainees.

The duties of the Staff Scientist will include support of multiple projects focused on high-throughput methodologies including cell-based screening and next-generation sequencing of mRNA and DNA. A strong foundation in mRNA transcription, processing and translation is essential. General knowledge of mass spectrometric analysis and protein modeling will be considered a bonus. Anticipated sequencing efforts include but are not limited to base-level variant calling, antibody-based enrichment (RIP-seq), alternative pre-mRNA splicing analysis, analysis of mRNA translation (Ribo-seq), determination of RBP binding locations (CLIP-seq), single cell analysis, structural predictions and beyond. The laboratory is further developing Oxford Nanopore technology for single-molecule determination of complex mRNA splicing patterns and site-specific mapping of modified nucleotides. A high degree of independence, demonstrated ability to work in a team, and ability to synthesize and adapt to new knowledge will be required.
