Primary Function of Organizational Unit
(1) Founded in 2003 by the University of North Carolina system to (1) conduct research (2) offer educational opportunities and (3) provide outreach in coastal and marine science and management to a wide variety of audiences. Coastal Studies Institute facilities provide researchers with an eastern NC platform and base for conducting new research or extending the scope of ongoing work.
(2) Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-university, collaborative institute dedicated to understanding and improving the coastal environment and its communities through integrative, location-based research, education and community engagement. The programs of the institute are as follows: Estuarine Ecology & Human Health; Coastal Engineering & Ocean Energy; Coastal Processes; Public Policy and Coastal Sustainability’ Maritime Heritage and Public Education and Outreach.
Job Duties
The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of impactful research and engagement projects in the discipline of marine science, geography, environmental science, or a related field. Their responsibilities include conducting data analyses of existing research projects, communicating research in written and oral forms, generating novel ideas for new, interdisciplinary research, working with large, multi-layered spatial data sets (e.g. Remote Sensing and GIS), and contributing to the growth of the interdisciplinary Integrated Coastal Studies Program, which focuses on issues related to the continental margin resources, natural hazards, and coastal and marine health.
Specific duties include: developing and contributing to ongoing NASA funded research projects at ECU and the Coasts and Oceans Observing Laboratory, assisting with intramural and extramural papers, proposals and progress reports, and coordinating and convening meetings with research members. In addition, the scholar will need to conduct biogeochemical and geomorphological research, including field data collection and analysis using remotely sensed imagery and geospatial data. The scholar will have the knowledge and ability to conduct scientific literature reviews of ecological, coastal, and geological research are critical as well as the ability to perform analyses with Remote Sensing (optical and lidar), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Python, R, and/or other programming languages or image processing softwares. The scholar will also lead and/or assist with fieldwork and data collection in muddy, humid, and hot conditions; laboratory analyses, and co-manage field and lab operations.
Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety and the responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
Approximately 70 % of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to scientific research, data analyses, laboratory analyses, data synthesis, publishing scientific manuscripts, and assisting with grant proposals
Approximately 30 % of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory and field

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
The candidate should have research experience in the natural or multidisciplinary sciences, with familiarity with theories and methods that address contemporary environmental problems affecting coastal and marine environments and water resources. Preferred candidates will have or have the potential for successfully securing external funding and publishing scientific papers. Experience with working in multidisciplinary research environments and with programming languages (R, python, JavaScript) are preferred. Familiarity with Google Earth Engine, ArcMap, QGIS, or other similar software is a plus. Candidates with a background in geologic or ecological processes and field collection in wetlands and coastal regions are preferred. Candidates able to work on a boat and in harsh, muddy conditions while carrying equipment and instruments are preferred. Experience with boating and trailering.
